Haggle - a game of trading and secrets

Well, there are several players who have yet to make any offers or deals. I don’t think we should make any decisions until they have a chance to get their careers off the ground.

I agree – some players may be taking a “wait and see” approach – calling an early ending wouldn’t be very fair to them.

Fair enough. Just thought I’d ask.

Of course in a week we might all be pretty happy with our portfolios and the trades may become much less frequent. At that point we may need to re-address the issue.

Well, actual trades haven’t been seen for over a day now. But there’s been a semi-steady stream of offers, so that does indicate that active posters are still jockeying for advantage.

Come one, come all (as long as you’re on the list) down to Crazy Hal’s for our Summer Rules Blowout! That’s right, we’re looking to get that rulesheet filled out, so come on down and get’cher rules! Here’s what we’ve got on the block today:

Hal Offer #11A, for Doctor Who: A look at Rule Cards #6 and #12 in exchange for a look at Rule Cards #5 and #11.
Hal Offer #11B, for nesta: A look at Rule Cards #10 and 17 in exchange for a look at Rule Cards #5 and #15.
Hal Offer #11C, for percypercy: A look at Rule Cards #6, #14 and #18 in exchange for a look at Rule Cards #1, #5 and #15.
Hal Offer #11D, for Uncommon Sense: A look at Rule Cards #10, #14 and #17 in exchange for a look at Rule Cards #5, #11 and #15.
Offer only good to the first one to accept, except in the following cases: Hal Offer #11A and #11B would both be accepted, as would both Hal Offer #11B and #11C. Uncommon Sense, Hal Offer #11D cannot be combined with Hal Offer #10.

So this game is fun, but it’s frustrating to make an offer and not have a response for minutes, hours, days. In person this game would be a ton of fun, but right now I look at the Card/Rule list and see stuff I want but those posters aren’t active so I have to sit and wait.

Very Frustrating!

I fully agree, USCDiver.

Hmmm…hey chrisk…it acceptable to send other players a private message along the lines of “Hey, just so you’re aware, I’ve made you an offer. Please come take a look.”?

Hmm… sounds like it’s worth a try. Three conditions:

  • Be polite and considerate to your fellow players, as always.
  • Include me on all PMs, so that I can ‘see’ that strategy isn’t being discussed in private. (Maybe it’d have been a less frustrating game with all kinds of private strategy stuff, but I’m not going to make THAT jump right now.)
  • If someone posts an opt-out here in the thread that they do not EVER want to be pmed about offers, then that should be honored by all players. ‘I didn’t see it’ should not be an acceptable excuse.

Alrighty?

I’ve wondered the same thing. I’m pretty much addicted to this game so I’m constantly in the thread, refreshing all the time.

But there may be other posters that check the SDMB but not necessarily this thread. They might need a reminder every once in a while.

ETA: in response to Hal, already addressed by chrisk

Another parliamentary question. Can we place a limit on inactivity to remain in the game? I’m all for letting people take vacations, but if a player isn’t going to be active in the game, then the cards they hold are effectively taken out of the game and the Rules that hold and don’t deal give the players that do hold them a distinct advantage.

In a real life version of this game, no one would be allowed to go sit in a corner and sleep.

I’d say (the holiday weekend notwithstanding) 3 days of inactivity should invalidate that player’s hand and those rules/cards should be divied up amongst the other players post haste.

I don’t know… I’m uncomfortable with moving too quickly to confiscate anybody’s portfolio. Now, as the deadline approaches, ‘probate’ rulings will probably come into effect for anybody who is clearly not participating any more. But 3 days seems far too short to me.

Yes, moribund Hagglers do have a slightly skewing effect on the game, but it’s one that inevitably happens, and I don’t think I’d be any more anxious to sanction players for non-participation in a live event, though it’d be easier to peer pressure them then.

There are no rules that are held only by completely moribund players, since every rule has now been in play on the trading floor at least once. Some rules may end up hard to get, and some letters, but that’s part of the game in my opinion. And players who lag behind will generally find that someone has already been showing around their rules, thus decreasing the scarcity and value of that info.
Umm, sorry for the ramble. I’ll take that suggestion under advisement, but I have my own reasons for not moving too fast - and not just because it’s hard to figure out how to ‘divide’ up a number of items of assorted value like this.

Accept US offer #7: and would like to see rule #2 in exchange for rule #20.

NAF offer #6 (I think) sachertorte I will swap rules # 3 & 15 for #7 & 14.

Restate NAF offer #1: I will let anyone see rule 9 in exchange for any vowel. This offer will be good to as many takers as want it until I withdraw the offer in red.

The term ‘swap’ here is a bit unclear. Are you talking about actually exchanging rule slips?

Yes, I meant an exchange.

NAF offer #7: USCDiver I will trade you rule 20 in exchange for rule 8.

I dont’ think I have the patience for this game. Also I don’t like the insinuation that I’m stupid.
retract ALL offers

I will sell portions of my portfolio in exchange for points to be paid prior to the conclusion of the game.

sachertorte liquidation sale Rule Slip offer: I will sell one (1) rule slip in my possession for two (2) points.

sachertorte ‘V’ auction: Be the owner of the only non-defunct Letter ‘V’ in the game… make me an offer.
