Haggle - a game of trading and secrets

Huh.
Not that my opinion matters, but I would think that everyone using third person would **reduce **confusion. i.e., antecedents of “I” and “you” in quoted text can get confusing.

“The kingdom of squirrels offers the monarchy of bats three blue tiles in exchange for two red tiles” is less confusing than
“I offer the monarchy of bats …”
or worse
“I’ll give you …”

Plus, I like fake lofty decrees.

I won’t post in the third person, but I’d be open to using the Royal “We”.

I used the Royal we one time and it was the same as any other. Porcelain is porcelain.

Hmm…I wonder if the Queen has a new Nintento system, and if so, what she calls it?

MadTheSwine will not be posting in third person.

I’m just waiting for the Nintendo game starring golfer Michele Wie…I can’t wait to play with my wii wie.

Hey all. Just wanted to let you all know I am going to have slightly limited availability this weekend. I have family in town and I don’t think they would understand me spending my time on the computer instead of with them. I will try and be around a little bit every day though.

Still waiting on PMs from:
Priceguy
Omi no Kami

And a few thoughts on play while we wait…

When play begins, I’ll post the starting update - who has what cards and what rule slips, and then begin PM-ing rule content to each player. Once everybody has been sent the text of their rules, I’ll ring the start-of-trading bell, and we will be off.

Post trade offers, in blue, in something like the following format:

Chrisk offer #1: I will give AmazingSarah an F card in exchange for getting a look at rule slip #20.

There are a lot of variants on trades, obviously - you can leave them open to many people, you can leave a lot of options available in what you’re willing to take or receive. You can also mark a trade as ‘repeating’ if it’s such that you’d be able to fufill the terms of the deal more than once, in which case, please say (repeating 4 times) or (repeating infinitely) and more than one player will be able to accept that offer, or one player more than once.

If a trade has some options, such as:

Chrisk offer #3: I’ll show anybody any of my rule slips in exchange for two letter cards, or one letter card out of the following: V, W, X, or Z

Then, if you’re accepting, you MUST specify all of the options or the acceptance will be null and void

BAD - Okay, chrisK, I’ll accept offer #3 and I want to see rule 11.

GOOD - Okay, chrisK, I’ll accept offer #3, and give you two C’s in exchange for rule 11.

Accepts will be posted in green. If you want to make a counter-offer inspired by someone else’s offer, then just post it like any other offer.

To withdraw an offer before it has been taken, use red. Withdraw my offer #2

And if you can quote someone else’s offer while accepting it, all the better!

Does that sound like it makes sense? We can adjust the trading-floor guidelines as we go if there’s need.

On preview: Enjoy the time with the fam, NAF. Hope you don’t fall too far behind on the trading!

Same deal here. We’ll be at the in-laws all weekend, but I always spend a fair amount of time there on their computer. Sunday, however, is my sister-in-law’s baby shower/Memorial Day BBQ (gotta love that combo) – going to be offline most of that day.

Yeah, ditto (I’ll be mostly offline this weekend - not ditto I’ll be at Hal Briston’s sister-in-law’s baby shower/Memorial Day BBQ). I think most people will be offline for the long weekend, but that’s the way it goes in business. Those that will work on holidays get ahead.

Capitalism!!! Gotta love it!

Haha.

We canadians had our long weekend last time around, but maybe I can get some writing done if I convince myself I don’t have to check the game every ten minutes or so.

That sounds pretty good. It’ll be interesting- the only time I’ve played Haggle before, most negotiating was done one-on-one… this one will be very public. Lots more information available!

Are we starting yet? Huh, huh? Are we starting yet? When are we gonna start? Huh? Why can’t we start yet? Why, chrisk? Huh?
</two-year-old mode>

Oooh, you’ve played before Dragoness? Cool… mind if I ask what the rules were like and what the trading counters were?

And no, we’re not starting yet. We’ll give Priceguy and Kami a decent interval of time to show up and post… and if they’re no-shows, then we’ll have to figure out if we can round up substitutes for me to give their kits to, or if I’ll have to reorganize everything for ten or eleven players.

I’m hyper and excited about this too!  But on a message board, patience is a necessary virtue.

The one game I played (long time ago!) used the resource cards from Settlers of Catan as counters- brick, ore, wheat, sheep, trees. The rules had the basic “trees are worth three points each” and “wheat is worth two points each” but there were some cute ones- I remember that if you handed in at least so many bricks, you could build and oven and double the value of your wheat. Also, sheep were worthless unless you handed in at least one wood to fence them in. Cute stuff like that.

Right. I think that I’ve seen those rules on the net, or a version of them. Okay.

On some googling, I found that too- you mean this? http://parkchallenge.com/pc3/haggle/

Except that looks crazy unbalanced to me. If anyone misses rules 19 or 20, the instability and equilibrium ones, they end up totally and utterly screwed. Ouch.

Trying to come up with rulesets for this game is really interesting. There’s a lot of fun things you could do with different types of counters, like regular poker cards, or cards from different boardgames. I have a great little scenario in my head for those cards that come with Risk…

Have we had a ruling on teaming up? Publicly or privately?

No, I didn’t directly address that, so thanks for bringing it up.

No private teams, this time, I think that they’d just confuse things. All players are scored individually.

If two players want to co-operate publicly, there’s a lot of ways that they can do that, including sharing all their rules, and each offering to give the other whatever they need without asking for something in return. Only one can win, except in the event of a final tie, but the person who helped another win can probably claim some Haggling cred if they choose to go that way instead of competing for themself alone.

And - it looks like our final PMs have come in, so we’ll be starting right now, in the middle of the night. Stand by, anybody who’s still awake!

Somewhere in the distance, in the middle of the night, a bell rings two and a half times.

Twelve doper men and women slowly file into the Haggling hall. In the center, there is a long table, with a chair drawn up for each of them, and a sealed envelope sitting in front of each chair. After a lot of slow, uncertain choosing, all the players take a seat, and, after a nod from the shadowy presence standing at the head of the table, tear open their packages to see what they are starting with.

Inside the packages are tiny little ticker-tape rules, like the insides of fortune cookies, and large Tarot-size white cards with letters embossed on them.

A notation like B (2) means that you got two cards marked with a B.

Please remember that you may not start any trades yet. I will be back to signal the GO once I have PMed every player with their rule content. (And then I will be back to sleep for around 2-3 hours.)
