So, recently I have been venturing into some “soul” type music. I have been digging the last few days the song “Rich Girl”, “Sara Smile”, and “She’s Gone” by Hall and Oates. Now, I know these guys put out about 25 albums, most of them shitty '80s music and some poor folk type stuff. Anyhow, are there any other great songs like the ones above? They have a great sound, and I do not want to go through all the bad songs to find anymore good ones, I was hoping you guys might be able to help!
Also, any other bands/singers with the same style/genre?
You could also check out Daryl Hall’s solo album which was produced by Robert Fripp. A song from that called North Star appears on Fripp’s Exposure album.
As far as H & O go, I’ve always liked “One on One” and “I Can’t Go For That”. Their Greatest Hits: Rock & Soul Part 1 has most their better songs and avoids too much 80s cheese, but “Maneater” is on it.
If you mean other “blue-eyed soul” singers try David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs or some Robert Palmer.
Why A Duck, another Robert Fripp and Marx Brothers fan, yay!
Oh, I adore these guys, H and O, I was so in love with Mr. Hall for years.
The cd/album Along the red ledge has a great soulful song on it, ‘have I been away too long?’ and some other good ones.
Daryl has the best set of pipes. His voice drives me nuts. There is one cd, it is ‘The Ballads Collection’ that has a lot of great songs on it, it has have I been away and also everytime you go away, which is so good it hurts – but the best version of that is on the Voices disc. Bigger than both of us is one good album too. It has do what you want, be what you are on it. It is soul-ish tripping music, not the bouncy pop stuff at all.
“Because the strong give up and move on, while the weak, the weak give up and stay.”
Sacred Songs is a good album, but it is kind of weird too, more than soulful.
Hope you will check these out, they are so good.
Now I’m off to toss the ballads collection in the cd player,
Bethany
Oh Daryl, if you’re reading this, let’s get together. I still love ya.
The Righteous Brothers set the standard for blue-eyed soul. They also recorded some stinkers, but their best work is stunning. Look for the Rhino Anthology 1962-1974. It’s a 2-disc set.
