What is your favorite song? Have you ever been to one of their concerts?
Sarah Smile
yes, way back in the early 80s, right about when they started being kind of pop/dance-ish. I prefered their older stuff.
“She’s Gone”–the album cut,
Nope, I still haven’t seen them live. But I did see their A&E Live by Request concert earlier this year.
Maneater – I liked the saxophone playing in that one.
Private Eyes
I liked a lot of their stuff back in the 80s. Never saw a live concert, no.
Maneater had a real affect on me. I had this crush on a girl, which I didn’t understand (as I was also a girl) and this song always reminds me of those times. It makes me feel risky, and a bit naughty, because I thought liking this girl was a bit naughty too.
Sorry to answer your question before I go off into dream land.
Yes I like them, not what you would call a fan though.
I met one of his ex-groupies whom he knocked up when he did a show in MN. He paid the child support, but he never met his love child.
I like Rich Girl a lot.
Which one?
And while we’re on the subject, here’s an anecdote about Hall. (Apologies if I already posted it in my H&O thread of last month.) I have this book about professional waitstaff sharing anecdotes. One of the celebrity anecdotes was about Hall being told that his plate was hot, touching it anyway, burning his finger, and leaving in a huff (also refusing to pay). Somehow, the chef was apprised of this and followed him out to his limo, tapped on the window with his knife and, when the window was lowered, growled, “Don’t you come back to my restaurant, you big baby.” LOL.
(In answer to the question, yes, I like them. Mr. Rilch does not. I can really get under his nerves with that.)
i like:
i cant go for that
maneater
family man
Daryl Hall was John Oates’ bitch. you could see it in his eyes.his private eyes
heh
I always thought they were a little cheesy, but I liked the video for their cover of Jingle Bell Rock, where Daryll Hall unloads the presents to find John Oates smiling behind them. Used to crack me up.
Love Hall & Oates. I always liked Private Eyes, but my current favorite of theirs is Method of Modern Love. I always picture him drumming on the trash cans.
They were gay before gay was cool.
I Can’t Go for That.
No, no,
No can do…
Hall and Oates is number one on my list of “Songs that get stuck in your head after hearing just three notes and stay stuck there for days” list. Just about any song by them has that effect on me.
I saw them twice; first in 1977, then again in 1980.
I was a bit dubious the first time but they really performed.
I was in the balcony and even there everyone was dancing - pretty unusual for the venue.
The second time was almost as good…
The live album from round about then captures them pretty well, I think.
Not that I’ve played it for a decade.
I saw them twice, too - but the last time I saw it ruined it for me.
They were playing in Virginia Beach, and Marthha Quinn came out and told the audience they were filming for a video and we’ get to be in it if we stayed. Then they were to film some live footage. The band came out and put on their instruments, which weren’t plugged in, and lip-synched to whatever their hit was at that time (can’t remember which). We were nonplussed at the synching, but not concerned. Then they put down the instuments, went back offstage and out comes Martha again to tell us to reeeeeelly act excited, especially when the camera swoops down from the ceiling to the stage. So out they run, hi to the crowd and lip-synch the same song again. This went on two more freakin’times! We were livid - this took up an hour of time we paid to see H&O perform, and we were getting ripped off. After the fourth time, they finally came out and really gave a concert, but we were so soured by being put through that boring display ruined the show for us, and many many people, myself included, left early.
Having said that, I still love their music, but that was a sucky thing to do to an audience.
I have never seen them perform in concert, just on TV or videos.
I love:
Private Eyes
Method of Modern Love
and others which escapes me now.
I can never turn off the radio, when one of there songs comes on, I love the Harmony they have.
I never cared for their image, but their melodies were always so infectious that it just doesn’t matter.
Your Kiss Is On My List
Maneater
Private Eyes
I Can’t Go For That
Method of Modern Love
They really had a feel for catchy tunes and lyrics. Probably underrated as the serious music crowd undoubtedly hates them.
Two of my favorites are Rich Girl and Sara Smiles.
Time to pull out my old copy of Rock 'n Soul Pt. I.
I love all their music but “Family Man” really struck a chord with me. I recently heard them play on the Plaza on The Early Show “Mission to Mars” (I think this is their new album) They played a few new songs and they were great.
These two were just recently inducted into the Rock and Roll House of Soul.
Rich Girl (of course)
