Hall & Oates Questions

I find it hard to believe that Oates could out-sing Hall. I never was a fan of their music, but Daryl Hall had (has? – I haven’t heard anything recent) an outstanding voice. Top notch. Very well controlled.

I hadn’t heard about H & O in a long time until early last year when they appeared on the half time show of the '01-'02 NBA All-Star game. Earlier that same week, there was an H & O reference on Scrubs when Dr. Cox described his ex-wife as a maneater, “but in not in the woa-oh, here she comes way.” Are they trying to mount a comeback? During their NBA performance one of them had a guitar and the other didn’t. I don’t know which one was which; even if I could have told them apart in their heyday, I doubt I could tell them apart now, as they look ancient now.

All these posts and no Simpsons reference to Oates?

From “Lisa’s Rival”:

“Avis Rent-a-Car is proud to present, “The Second Best Band in America”. Welcome Garfunkel, Messina, Oates, and Lisa singing their number two hit, “Born to Runner Up””

Hall & Oates recently had a #1 Hit on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart, which is a fairly impressive feat, considering the last time they were anywhere near the charts was nearly 10 years ago.

Since I have no idea what you’re referring to, WSLer, I suppose that makes me neither adult nor contemporary.

Billboard magazine is a magazine devoted mainly to the music industry. They keep track of album/singles/airplay for various genres/formats and every issue has charts for the various genres/formats listing the Top 20/40/100/200 in each genre according to sales/ radio airplay.

My first two albums (on vinyl, of course) were Duran Duran’s Rio and Hall & Oates’ H2O. I was 8 years old, very impressionable, and part of the MTV generation.

The punk band the Vandals actually wrote a song about G.E. Smith called N.I.M.B.Y.. It’s a pretty good song, and refers to G.E. as a Blond Frankenstein with Dutchboy hair, which is a pretty accurate description.
