Everyone who is anyone does the sugar cookie thing for Christmas but I do it for Halloween; you know, I make fun shaped sugar cookies for Halloween and have my pals over to help decorate them… anyone else?
Or is it just me?
Am I alone in the scary world of Halloween treats with only Martha Stewart?! Dear, Goddess, please! Oh, please, don’t let me be alone!
I usually make pumpkin shapes and throw in some weird ones just to see how my pals will decorate them. Anyone else?
I’ll share your cookies any day hon!! Yep, every Halloween boyo and I make sugar cookies and decorate them in black and orange and also make rice krispie square goblins. I have these great little metal molds to put the krispies in… then we pull them out and decorate with icing and licorice strings. He takes them to school to pass out to his class.
Hey, I like the rice crispy thing… I know I can twist that into any weird shape! I do pass out cookies and all to the kids in my neighborhood… it’s really too sad that there are too many whack jobs out there that make it impossible for me to give them out at large… I have to make sure to give my special treats to kids I know… sad really, all those wonderful kids I DON’T know only get a candy bar… oh, full size… did I mention that?
I don’t give out those silly “fun size” things (my ASS those are ‘fun size’ when we all know the really FUN size is about 2’ by 3’!) But you know, what I do is go to Sam’s Club and get a box of full sized candy bars and give those out… and that’s to the kids I don’t know!
I remember being a kid and how much fun it was so I go out of my way as an adult to make it BETTER for the kids in my neighborhood. And I’ve found they are very sweet to me; I’ve never been egged or TP’d… I am smart in currying their favor… hey, you gotta play, right?
Love making Halloween cookies. This year I did frosted sugar cookies, in the shape of pumpkins, ghosts, and fall leaves. Well, they were regular-leaf shaped, the frosting part brought out the fall colors.
Speaking of Martha Stewart, this year I also added her chocolate cut out cookies, in the shape of bats and cats. I didn’t ice the whole cookie, just used the icing to trace the bats’ wings and their fangs and eyes. There’s enough chocolate in the recipe to choke a cow. These were a big hit.
Byzantine, I love the full-size candy idea! When I was a kid, I thought the coolest thing in the world would be to get a full-size candy bar for Halloween. It still might be on my top ten list.
I didn’t make Hallowe’en cookies this year, but I did make chocolate rats. I took full-sized rubber rats, bent tinfoil around them to give me their shape, and filled the foil with brownie batter. I stuck a maraschino cherry in where their heart would be, and used licorice whips for tails. I then covered them with a chocolate ganache.
They were a big hit at our party, although frankly they were too big. I think next year they’ll be chocolate mice instead of rats.
Piano – hey, I thought they looked fun too but I made my own; to each her own!
delphica – it is a HUGE hit in my neighborhood! I had over 70 kids this year! I’m usually the first house they hit before they go over to Sandy (bigger, richer neighborhood).
I made Halloween candy. I melted down chocolate (white and milk) and put it into skull, brain and bat molds! The bats were, of course, milk chocolate, the skulls were white chocolate and the brains were white chocolate with food coloring swirls so they were purplish-pink! Everyone liked them. Next year, I’ll probably go back to cookies.
Byz, full-size candy bars? As if I needed another reason to love you…
pepperlandgirl – well, that’s the RIGHT time! I made them early but we didn’t really decorate until Halloween night… hey, it’s traditional! You slather a few, eat them and repeat; I don’t think I have more than a few left afterwards!
evilbeth – you made candy?! I swear hon, we were MADE for each other!
My mom makes “pumpkin cookies.” She uses pumpkin like you use in pie and other stuff. I’m not sure how exactly, then she makes them in the shape of pumpkins. You spread peanut butter on them, and then you decorate them with candy, to look like a jack-o-lantern. Example: use M&M’s for eyes, licorice to shape a mouth, you can use anything. They’re good, I highly recommend them.
My family made some halloween cookies a couple weeks back that were amazing. I think they were Pilsbury. It’s sold in a cylinder that’s maybe 16" long and <4" in diameter. They’re sugar cookies, but the best type has a ghost design which is brown on the outside with a white sugar ghost center. Bake these and you may in fact never leave the kitchen.
