My local grocery was running a special where if you spent $300 in a certain period you would get a free spiral sliced half ham. Well, we shop there a lot so that wasn’t a problem. In fact we shop there enough that we got two. I redeemed the first one tonight and it is a very nice 8.7 lb ham from a good company.
I love ham, and my boys like it fairly much (but they are bad about eating “leftovers”). My wife isn’t much of a fan though. So, if I redeem the other one (seems a shame not to) we will have about 17.5 lbs of ham to eat. That is quite a bit for 4 people. Of course we will eat some as the regular ham, and then more as sandwiches, but I’m afraid we are still going to have LOTS left over.
So, we’ll have Ham and Eggs, Ham and Potatoes, Ham Ham Beans and Ham…
Any ideas of a good way to use up some extra ham (yes, I’m strongly considering giving away or donating one of them).
I make a wonderful soup with leeks, carrots and leftover ham. Just cook the leeks, about 3 large ones, with about 4 medium carrots in chicken stock, and the hambone if you have it for more flavour. When the veggies are tender, whiz them up with the immersion blender or in the food processor till smooth and add cubed ham.
Ham freezes very, very nicely. Consider cutting it up into 1/2 or 1 pound packages and freezing it. Pull it out for sandwiches, dice it up for breakfast with eggs, or any other of the great suggestions in this thread.
you might want to ask a checker if the store is set on you getting specifically a ham, especially towards the end of the giveaway. We have a similar thing here, where around the holidays, every time you go to that store, depending on how much you spend, you get a coupon with a certain dollar amount that you can use towards a ham or a turkey. I found out this year that the last week or so of the deal, they were willing to discount just about any meat for the “ham or turkey” dollars. They didn’t advertise it, but a checker told me. Maybe it’s just my store, but it’s worth asking.
Layer thinly sliced potatoes, ham, onions, and back bacon in a casserole dish. Put a final layer of sliced potatoes on the top. Cover with foil and bake until vegetables are soft. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve with Guinness and Irish soda bread.
Seriously good Senate bean soup. For a quicker, easier recipe use a couple cans of Northern or cannelini beans and chicken broth, and the key is to mash one can of beans with a fork to make it kind of creamy, and put in plenty of chunks of ham.
Not precisely what you’re asking for, but I’ll throw the idea out there anyway:
Our grocery chain used to do something similar around Thanksgiving, offering a free turkey. We always went to some relatives’ house for Thanksgiving and didn’t need the turkey. So I gave it to the local soup kitchen.
If you have an extra ham, chances are very good that they’d love to take it off your hand to supplement their Easter dinner. Might want to call them and see.
Ham is good. Love ham. But I have a hard time finding stuff that isn’t overly salty. Any suggestions? I usually buy the pre-cooked stuff to have with eggs. A nice, thick slice of ham is just perfect with eggs.
My wife usually saves some of the meat, the bone and whatever’s stuck to it after the spiral slicing, and makes ham stock, and then uses the reserved meat along with vegetables to make ham & vegetable soup, just like you’d make chicken & vegetable soup.
Sounds strange, but it’s really astonishingly good.
Does ham freeze well? Would it be possible to portion out a dinner’s worth put it in a freezer bag and freeze it? Then when we are in a pinch could have a ham dinner fairly easily.
