Just talked with our younger son, age 32, who lives in King City. He was there with you in SLO and agrees it was an older crowd. But I doubt the local news gave an age distribution.
In reference to whom? Trump? A particular congressperson?
Yes, trump.
Maybe Trump’s inaugural crowd had a smaller body count but was larger in net worth.
For those who want to play at home, Lauren Sánchez (Bezos’ squeeze), Bezos himself, Sundar Pichai (Google CEO), and Musk. The red-hats were, of course, left outside in the cold.
That seems kind of soon. I will be surprised if it gets anything like the same amount of turnout.
Except of course for the King of Kings, whose resurrection will be celebrated by Christians on the 20th.
There’s going to be another rally in my city this coming Saturday, the 12th. I might go to this one, because it has better parking.
OTOH, if trump pulls something even more outrageous by then… the mind boggles at what that might be.
Also, getting yourself to the first one meant overcoming inertia. Since the events seemed to be exciting and energizing for the people who went, going to the next one might feel easier. No one knew going into it how big the turnout would be. But 5+ million-- that’s downright inspiring. People like to jump on a bandwagon that’s crowded and rolling along.
I can see your point though.
I guess there was something happening there.
Stephen Stills went to the LA rally?
State Sen Mallory McMorrow was in Ferndale.
The social media account of Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump said:
“Wow! The April 5th protests–FAKE! Totally STAGED! I’m hearing from VERY reliable sources (the BEST sources) that George Soros paid FIVE MILLION people–can you believe it??–$100 MILLION EACH to protest. Total scam. They’re not protestors–they’re 5 million ACTORS.!”
This doesn’t read like a Trump truth so I checked Truth Social and it’s not there. He has ignored the subject so far. But, hey, if George was giving each protester $100 million, even MAGAs might change sides.
In London there was a modest crowd of 200-300 at the protest. No notable speakers, but everyone was extremely nice and I chatted with many.
Some signs:
- “I am extremely miffed”
- “My cat could poop a better president”
- (With picture of Cookie Monster) “Democracy is not a sometimes food”
And of course:
- “Trump is a cunt. (Janey Godley was right!)”
There were also two twenty-something MAGA dudebros in crocs, baggy shorts and black baseball caps attempting and failing badly to provoke the crowd into getting angry so they could film it. I followed them around for a bit to see what they were doing.
Dudebro (who has been wandering around for over half an hour talking to people): “What is this all about? Is it a pro-Trump rally?”
Protester: “Look at the signs. There are a lot of them.”
Other dudebro: “Make America great again!”
Protester: “We’re trying.”
Appropriately enough, right next to the protest against Trump’s bullshit was a larger and angrier one against Erdogen’s bullshit. They should have coordinated the protests - same bullshit, different countries.
There was also a little group (about a dozen people) protesting the regime in Iran. So a good day for fans of freedom, and the weather was lovely for it.
Your picture left off Zuckerberg, who was to Sanchez’s right. Forbes said all the billionaires at the inaugural were worth a combined $1.35 Trillion. But they count a number of them not in that line.
I did a quick search and no good ones with Zuck came up. I’m sure there were others not quite so close.
Congressman Troy Carter (D-LA) and two city council members spoke at the New Orleans event.
Well, rats. I was looking forward to secret video of ketchup bottles hitting the wall.
Another fantastic set of pictures from The Atlantic. This is supposed to be a gift link. I’m never sure with this publication…
I see on FB the local members of the maga cult are saying “paid protesters” in response to the big turnout which is obviously ridiculous to anyone who was there.
But it’s a big signal that is what the trusk side is planning. Sooner or later, violence will be caused and it won’t be the real protesters causing it.
but it will be the excuse for martial law.
I really wanted us to carry signs that said ‘Careful, now’ and ‘Down with this sort of thing’.
Two signs I saw at our La Crosse, Wisconsin rally addressed this:
“This is so important, even introverts are marching!”
“I hate crowds, but I’m here because we must push back against the bullies”
I don’t know where she saw it, but my wife claimed to have seen an interview (or a transcript of one) where Fox’s Harris Faulkner asked Trump about the protests and she got a big bowl of word salad in reply.
