Hannkah meal plans?

The holiday starts on Sat.

My menu:

chicken matzo ball soup with orzo
sauteed broccoli
brisket with potatoes
potato latkes with smoked salmon
store bought donuts / gelt / purchased chocolate / coconut macaroons

Latkes. Lots and lots of latkes. Then more latkes. Now that you mention it, it’s good smoking weather, time to pick up some salmon. And lots of potatoes.

Did I mention latkes? I plan to make a lot of those.

Also, don’t forget the latkes.

ETA: I’ll be making latkes.

I can definitely get behind that plan. We like both the crunchy thin kind and the more “meaty” kind with a thicker core of potato. Latkes are a great use for any leftover mashed potatoes.

They have to be thick enough to be crunchy on the outside, and soft in the middle for me. And you can make potato pancakes by grating potatoes with a food processor. But for latkes, they have to be hand grated. I wouldn’t want to face my grandmother in the non-existent Jewish Hell if I didn’t do that.

Potato latkes, sweet potato latkes, and leek latkes.

(You know, the Jew Police won’t arrest you if you have a holiday meal without chicken matza ball soup. It’s not mandatory.)

If there’s a potato shortage in January, we’ll know why.

Now for the big question: applesauce or sour cream?

Doesn’t the presence of brisket on this menu make the sour cream a non-starter? At least for Kosher households.

The brisket doesn’t have to be there, either. We usually eat milchik for our Hanukkah meals.

I have always made latkes by grating the spuds with a box grater, but this past weekend I saw someone on the Cooking channel make them using pre-baked russets that they ran through a ricer. This looked wonderful, and I suppose would yield the fluffy inside that everyone loves.

And I looked for brisket this past week and got sticker shock! Bastids!

Hey the soup is easily the best thing I can cook. The soup is as mandatory as the latkes. Which have to be potato to honor my kids the Irish Jews.

I can’t believe nobody mentioned potato pancakes.

Anyway, I’ll be making some latkes. Probably a brisket, too.

I could make matzo ball soup but I can’t quite make it as good as my mother’s.

Don’t forget the HE’BREW.

I’ll be making tempura veggies for sides on some of the intermediate days. It’s fried, and my girlfriend probably won’t let me serve latkes and donuts for a week straight.

I’m going to make chocolate-covered latkes. I made some last year, but for some reason no one ate them except me.
