Happy Hanukkah! We lit the first candle in the menorah last night. I went to Whole Foods and got latkes, and we had them for dinner with some nice Brussels sprouts that I found (it is evidently Brussels sprout season, all the markets seem to have nice ones now). Whole Foods makes good latkes. They are especially good with honey goat cheese from Trader Joe’s.
Crap, I missed it. I’ll have to get some candles tonight and celebrate one day behind.
I haven’t even gotten out my holiday decorations yet.
Happy Hanukkah!
Happy Chanukah!
I made sweet potato latkes last night. My house still smelt of fried oil this morning.
I’ve offered my lady a round of zucchini-feta latkes. Latkes rock once you drop the potatoes.
Hanukkah is really early this year, so it’s not so surprising that it caught you unawares. I almost left my Hanukkah shopping until too late, and panicked when I realized.
May a humble goy offer a Happy Hanukkah to all the Jewish dopers?
I also left the candle-buying to the last minute last night, and was panicked that I wouldn’t have any candles at all for the first night. I would have just got some after work but London transport is pretty much shut down due to snow, and I didn’t want to get stuck.
The corner shop at the end of our street saved us with the LAST PACK of 99p birthday candles. Phew!
A wish of a joyous holiday to all who are celebrating.
I’m going to be making some non-potato latkes later on. I’ve got recipes from Joan Nathan’s Jewish Cooking in America for zucchini-Anaheim pepper latkes, curried sweet potato latkes, and carrot-parsnip latkes. I’m planning to make them all before Hanukkah is over. They may turn out as hash rather than latkes (as latkes so often do, when I make them), but I’m sure they’ll still taste good.
Sure you can! Thanks!
I think my frying last night produced 9 pancakes, 1 potato hash. That’s better than last year.
If you want, I’ll try and get you my wife’s leek latke recipe.
The eighth night of Hanukkah happens to be my child’s first birthday this year. So it should be quite a celebration with all the candles and the presents!
I would like to wish all of our Jewish dopers a happy Hanukkah as well.
Chag sameach.
It was my mom’s birthday, too. And I’m slowly recovering from a near nervous-breakdown. And my cat is fluffy. So good feelings all around.
My husband’s Irish and I’m Jewish. The potatoes stay put.
He likes the holiday of fried things very much.
We lit candles last night and tonight, but the sprog had a sore throat, so the latkes didn’t happen. This is OK because mine come from a box. The noise in my house is my Tante Mary, z"l, turning over in her grave. I’m not a very good Jew.
2nd night candles are lit. I’m only a Jew-in-law, but I do love the traditions, the foods, the brightness of Hanukkah.
We recite the prayer in Hebrew together when we light the candles, and when I supply the English translation, I always include the variation my husband’s grandmother (RIP) used: instead of “**commanded us **to kindle the Hanukkah lights” she preferred “requested us.” Who am I to argue with a Jewish grandmother who lived to age 95?
Happy Festival of Lights to all!
I light all eight candles on the last night rather than doing it each night. Saves more time, I guess (blame it on me being Reform). My mother-in-law makes tudou bing for us to eat which are, more or less, just the Chinese version of latkes. She has no idea what a latke is, though. Or what a “Jew” is, for that matter. This year’s hanukkah is a special one!
Happy Hanukkah to all our Jewish Dopers! Have a great one!!
It’s okay, Robyn. Up until a few years ago, my latkes came from a bag. At least you try.
Happy Hanukkah everyone! This is the first year I haven’t celebrated with my family (I’m a college student) but I went up to my friend’s apartment and we lit some candles, so that was really nice.
