I’ll make the Nanaimo Bars, the Butter Tarts, and Saskatoon berry pie.
I can buy icewine at a vendor’s about a half-mile away. Maybe that’s what I’ll do to celebrate. I was thinking of getting my tattoo today, but the husband sort of harumphed (maple leaf, Alberta wild rose, Inukshuk).
It is fun to talk about some of the stumper trivia questions that no one but a Canuck or a Canaphile would get, like who scored the winning goal in the 1972 Summit Series, and where were you when it happened?

Paul Henderson. I was sitting in my homeroom with the rest of my class watching the game on TV. We were at school because we had to be, but no teaching was occurring. Every student, teacher, and staff member was watching the game on a TV somewhere in that school building. Yep, hockey is that important to Canadians.
As for today? Maybe some butter tarts and some excellent Canadian beer. I should go and put the flag out. Anybody know if there’s a CFL game on TV (that is, a game that isn’t blacked out)?
Ginger, we should start an expatriates club, and have our own virtual party. We’ll definitely have Alberta beef, and I’ll contribute a load of the blueberries that’ve become the signature food of Sudbury.

And tourtiere? Can we have tourtiere?
I miss being home. Happy Dominion Day one and all.
ETA - That’s what I get for not reading the entire thing. We’re having tourtiere! Woo! I’m not much of a cook, so I’ll bring the Coffee Crisps and Smarties. Oh. And Thrills gum. Heh.
Ahhhh, one of my favorite holidays… See, 90% of my clients are in Canada, so a holiday for them is pretty much a holiday for me!
Damn you, Los Angeles! If not for my having you as a territory as well, I could pretty much blow off the entire day!
Happy Canada Day, all!
(So, if I have to make a trip to get some business done on your side of the border, would July 4 be a good day for it?)
About as good a day as one of us making a business trip south of the border on July 1.

Keep your stupid soapy gum. And stupid dutchies, too.
Thanks, and Happy Canada Day to all other Canadians on the board. There are lots of activities here this year, though not as many as in Quebec City-- celebrations of the 400th anniversary.
In Montreal, we’re having fireworks in various neighbourhoods, and there is a big celebration in the Old Port. However, this is also Outdoors Party Night at the Montreal Jazz Festival, so about 100,000 people usually gather for that. One year I got crushed in the crowd, my feet were off the ground and I was pushed against a beer stand for most of the concert/party, so I’ve avoided that one since.
BTW, here in the province of Quebec, today is Moving Day, a well-established utter nightmare. Moving Day - Wikipedia
Oh, Canada, I would have never believed it
You got in my heart, after all
You seem like such an endless place
In a world that’s getting small
No, Canada ain’t some cabinet man
In the Rideau Club at election time
Oh, Canada is somewhere out there
Canada is somewhere out there
Out past the timberline
–Murray McLaughlan
Hope I got that snippet of lyrics right; the record (yeah, big, black, round thing) is somewhere buried in the back bedroom.
Anyway, great song and pretty good country! Not perfect, by any means, but I feel very lucky to live here.

I miss you, Sir Andrew.

Now who wouldn’t want a nice bar of soap to chew on? I ask you! And dutchies are gross. It’s the fritters that are fried goodness.
Moving Day is one of those things that I find fascinating but at the same time, I’m glad that it’s something that I don’t have to experience. It sounds insane.
What do you traditionally do celebrate Canada Day (feel free to share any broad cultural traditions or what you have done with your family and friends…)?

Well, since we live just down the street from the Saskatchewan Legislature, e every year at noon we hear the 21 gun salute booming away. Drives Piper Dachshund crazy.
In a little while, Mrs. Piper and I are going to the Lieutenant Governor’s Garden Party held on the grounds of Government House. Then this evening, we’re going with friends to watch the fireworks from Albert Street Bridge, overlooking Wascana Lake and the Lege.

Which is REALLY WEIRD since he’s not from Ontario.

Sure I am! 3 years in Ottawa, 6 in New Liskeard, 4 in Kitchener-Waterloo, 1 in Peterborough.
Well, then there’s the 6 years in SK and AB, as well as the 3 in BC. But the majority was in ON…
