Happy Hanukkah everyone.

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah or Chanukah.

As a mixed family we will be lighting the 1st candle tonight and the kids are getting a present from Grandma (my MIL). They will then get small science oriented presents or a bit of gelt the next 7 days. Then comes Christmas a few weeks later with the avalanche of gifts over a 2 day period.

My extended family exchanges gifts on Christmas Eve and then we open the presents on Christmas morning for my immediate family. More often than not with my Brother staying over our house.

What are other posters doing for the holidays?

Hey- Happy Hanukah to you as well!

Tonight the kids get their big present and I make latkes. They’ll get gelt and smaller gifts for the rest of the holiday. They also each get a new drieldel every year so they have a pretty cool collection now.

Friday we celebrate with friends, Sunday with my parents and sisters etc.

My MIL (who is not Jewish, neither is my husband) sends the kids teh Harry and David Jewish star box- you open one piece every night and reveal different treats. It’s very cool!

Happy Hanukkah! Hooray!

The girlfriend and I will be exchanging gifts tonight - I am a Jewish otter; she is not. We will also exchange gifts for Christmas. She got me a gift for each night of Hanukkah and I got her several nice Christmas gifts.

All of this will take place under our mixed Christmukkah tree/bush.

I saw that in their catalog, and thought “How cool!”. I think next year I may get the kids one, even though we’re not Jewish. Would that be okay? I hope it wouldn’t be perceived as offensive. Neither my husband or I practice any religion, although we were raised Christian (Him-Catholic, me-Baptist). I usually tend to incorporate lots of different traditions in our family celebrations in an effort to raise children who are open minded (and not xenophobic troglodytes). I have toyed with the idea of incorporating a few of the Hanukkah traditions.

As for celebrating our holiday: Sprite #3 is valiantly carrying out his assignment of keeping track of the Advent calendar and distributing the candy. Yummy munchies are being prepared, we’ll do a mass cookie decorating this Saturday, most of the presents are purchased, the tree and other decor is up and lit, and I’m just enjoying the season with my family.
I hope all the Dopers enjoy theirs, however they choose to celebrate it, as well

The Supreme Court in a ruling (I forget which) decided that theproper spelling of the festival of lights is “Chanuka”.
have a freilichen Chanuka
