Happy Orthodox Jewish Man...

I like the Jewish smiley, though I rarely use it. Its pointlessness is part of its charm. I vote to keep it.

Presenting the first ever SDMB Emoticon Musical:

;j At three I started Hebrew school ;j
;j At ten I learned a trade ;j
;j I hear they picked a bride for me ;j
;j I hope… she’s pretty
Golde: Tevye, Chava and Fyedka were married today by a priest
Tevye:  :frowning:

And I thought I had too much time on my hands.

;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j What’s the buzz? Tell me what’s a-happening! What’s the buzz? Tell me what’s a-happening! ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j
 Why should you wanta know?
:dubious: Don’t you mind about the future.
:stuck_out_tongue: Don’t you try and think ahead.
 Save tomorrow for tomorrow.
;j Think about today instead.

;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j ;j

When you do them like that they look like Space Invaders.

Really? I always thought it looked like a person yawning from boredom (note the eyes).

Come to think of it, it did often seem to be used in rather counterintuitive places.

(And since I note that the quote-in-a-quote didn’t come through, this is the smiley we’re talking about: :o )

jackelope, hove your mouse over the symbol. What does it say?

Well, when I do that, it misspells “embarrassment”. :o

As for the HOJM smiley, it doesn’t have many uses, true, but it’s still funny. Whose idea was it?

Aha! I knew there had to be a backstory of some kind. Thanks.

Y’all are really funny . . . and still creative!

Thanks for making me laugh out loud and sing along.

your humble TubaDiva

PS Maybe it’s time we did another smiley contest sometime in the next few months. I’ll take it to the rest of the staff and ask Ed.

I love the Happy Orthodox Jewish Man! And besides, in GQ, questions about Judaism aren’t all that rare. It’s an excellent way to cap a post explaining kosher law or circumcision.

;j You’ll take my yarmulke when you pry it off my cold, dead head.

NoClueBoy, you left Spock’s ears off of the Star Trek smiley : ^:dubious:^

As for the Concerned Amish boy, the best I could come up with is [del] ;j [/del] (happy Amish boy driving a buggy), although this really looks like drag-racing Jewish man.

No, actually, it looks like the Jewish man is lifting weights.

I think we need an eye-batting smiley. It’s an important part of my IM banter, certainly.

Weight lifting:
[del];j[/del]

Drag racing:

              o-------;j--/[sup]--[/sup]O

I was thinking ;j was Happy Orthodox Jewish Man enjoying his new stereo speakers.

Call me crazy, but…

I could swear that once upon a time if you moused over HOJM he’d transform into Unhappy Chinese Man. But not now.

:dubious:

Well? Anyone else ever…
:dubious:

It was that if you highlighted one of the smilies, it’d look Asian. I can’t make any of them do it now, though. Seems like the angry smiley is the best candidate. Maybe it depends on how many colors your monitor displays.

If I highlight HOJM, he looks Asian.

My display settings:

Win 2000
1024 x 768 pixels
32-bit color

I don’t think this option is available. At least it is nowhere I can find.

Please God, no.

…I’d be that idiot.

I like the smackey smiley, it very clearly expresses how I feel sometimes.

But the one in my sig is the one that I most represent.
