The origin of the new smiley was fraught with intrigue, hurt feelings, disagreement, trolling etc. A classic Dope story, but probably not as exciting as you might think from my description.

The lesson I learned from our happy orthodox jewish smiley adventure: if you add a feature at the message board off the cuff, without a full-blown committee meeting discussing all possible pros and cons, you open yourself up for years of confusion. 
Yes, the HOJM turns Chinese when highlighted; the embarrassed smiley :o looks like psychotic screaming man when highlighted. Highlight the Smackie :smack: and he becomes Elephant Man, or something.
And how does this differ from adding a feature after convening a full-blown committee meeting discussing all possible pros and cons?
The difference would be that when an idea is reviewed at a full-blown department meeting, it typically dies in the commitee and nothing gets done.
