Here it is March 14th and you know what that means?
It’s π Day !!!
And due to the day of the week, it’s a Fri-day π Day
As we all know, π is a transcedental number representing the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.
To 2 decimal places it is 3.14 and for those using the American convention of numerical dating, March 14 = 03/14
And if that isn’t exciting enough, in keeping with the intellectual aspects of this holiday, March 14th is also Albert Einstein’s birthday.
So, enjoy the day. I hope you folks haven’t postponed your π day shopping until the last minute. Did you already decorate the π day tree and are you ready to sing those π day carols?
Well, that’s more than enough introduction. Let’s see how other Dopers are celebrating this momentous day.
Sorry about the hijack, but I figured an announcment here was better than a separate thread:
Following the pi day festivities will be a memorial service for Caesar. We will honor his bequethal of 75 drachmas to every citizen, as well as his walks, his private arbours and new-planted orchards on this side Tiber.
In order to best serve Caesar’s memory, should you encounter anyone named Marcus Brutus, Cassius, Casca, Trebonius, Ligarius, Decius Brutus, Metellus Cimber, or Cinna on Saturday, kindly slay them in Caesar’s honor. Ignore the fact that certain Cinnas may protest that they are Cinna the Poet, or some such nonsense. In that case, you can be sure to tear him for his bad verses.
Oh, and if you see any lionesses whelping in the streets, graves yawning and yielding up their dead, or especially Fierce fiery warriors fighting upon the clouds, drizzling blood upon the Capitol, be sure to take a video and post it on youtube. However, afterwards you should probably head home for the day.
Now I will a rhyme construct,
By chosen words the young instruct.
Cunningly devised endeavour,
Con it and remember ever.
Widths in circle here you see,
Sketched out in strange obscurity.
My boyfriend’s birthday party is being held on Pi Day, so I am baking a pie as my contribution. We’re just both disappointed that it won’t work out for me to arrive at his place bearing pie at 1:59. He’s also considering reciting the first 100 digits of pi as part of the festivities.
Now I, even I, would celebrate in rhymes inept,
the great immortal Syracusan rivall’d nevermore
who in his wondrous lore passed on before
left men his guidance how to circles mensurate.
The [del]students[/del] learners at the school where I work have created Pi necklaces, with ten different coloured beads for 0-9, which I thought was rather clever. I think they went up to 50 digits.
A nephew once asked me if pi was called that because it has something to do with pie. I told him, “Absolutely.”. I then launched into an explanation about the relationship between the distance across the pie and the distance around the pie, and how useful this was in determing both the area and volume of a pie, when one was shopping and looking to maximize the amount of pie per dollar. “Then why is it spelled differently?” Oh, that’s so you can tell’em apart: the pie that you eat has an e on the end. Fighting ignorance, one child at a time.
Anne Neville, sorry to inform you but I did mention in posting #1 that it is the birthday of Mr E=mc² himself. (Not that I wanted to correct you, it’s just that I wouldn’t want anyone to think I was remiss in honoring his birth.)
Thank you. We now continue with our program already in progress.
I actually have a π pie ceramic baking dish. Symbol in the bottom, as many digits as will fit around the edge. Turns up in those cheap kitchen supply catalogs. I use it for for apple and shepherd’s π.
Unfortunately I have a bad cold at the moment and don’t feel up for baking.
