lissener, I agree with you that the way EC talks about women is often creepy (though I wouldn’t say he’s a misogynist), but I don’t think you can really make a case with that post. There’s nothing that says that he wouldn’t feel the same way about attractive young men playing nuclear physicists, in fact he implies that he would.
Right; that was the “hardly worth a pitting” part of the OP. I just didn’t want to derail the CS thread. But in any case, it’s a good thing I don’t need to make a case with that post: EC’s history in CS (I’m usually able to avoid him in the other forums) makes its own case. He seems to be nearly incapable of discussing a movie except as regards its titty factor. I have, personally, never come across a person to whom the concept of a female person as anything other than an object put on this earth to give him a hardon was such a totally foreign concept. I always thought the feminist concept of the misogynistic “objectification” of women was hyperbole. Reading EC’s posts has taught me otherwise.

Well, lessee, the points to be dealt with are three:
- Really a wommen’s libber? :dubious:
- Too much interest in women in terms of sex.
- Manner in which that interest is expressed.
Let’s start with number one. I think women should get equal pay for equal work. I think they should be entitled to perform any work they are capable of, and to play any sport they’re capable of. I’m pro choice. If two women want to get married, it’s OK with me, I’m not even sure why it should be any of my business. I think women are just as capable of being effective leaders as men. When it comes to sex, I’m all about consensuality. I think women, like men, should have every opportunity to express themselves as human beings, and that anything that hampers that expression is an imperfection in human society which all good people should be working to remove.
That said, I don’t consider myself a feminist per se. I do not consider it my personal duty to liberate womenkind. That is womenkind’s job. But most of the things they want to do, with the exception of that whole feminist censorship thing back in the 80s and 90s, strike me as generally good and wholesome things for men as well as women. I do not see how you can look at the history of U.S. society, and human society and not come to these conclusions, which seem eminently rational and sensible to me.
Now, I do not know what standards of feminism Mr. Lissiner may ascribe to, but those are the ones I ascribe to. Do they make me a quasi-feminist? I don’t think so.
Oh, I almost forgot, lissiner also thinks I’m a misogynist, a guy who hates women. I dunno where he’s getting this, perhaps he can support it with something more substantive than pretty pics and snark. Cause he’s dead wrong.

Of the first 25 results I pulled up, only 5 were about sex. 5 out of 25. Hardly seems to support your thesis. Makes you look like some kind of weird, perverted stalker who gets off in some kind of creepy way of following me around and taking note of my posts wrt sex, then objecting to them with a vaguely salacious air. Now, THAT’S squicky.

Dude, first of all it’s frikkin hilarious that you use a statistic in your own defense that most people would use to prove my point, not yours. If your own math is correct, then the standard would be that 20% of everyone’s posts in CS would be about sex. 20% of all posts in CS, about sex. Which isn’t even what I said: if 20% of everyone’s posts in CS were about sex, I’m not entirely sure I’d object: 20% of my mental energy is probably devoted to sex, like almost everyone else. It’s the misogyny I specifically objected to. (The fact that you equate “misogyny” with “sex” is extremely–exTREEMly–revealing.)
I don’t expect you to see this, EC; your view of the world around you is one of the most bizarrely limited cases of tunnel–albeit binocular*–vision that I have ever come across. You think of women as Tit Delivery Devices. It’s like you think that the purpose of evolution was to develop women so the porno industry could get underway.
And Taber, since EC is the one-trickiest of all the one-trick ponies this board has ever known, I can see why you’d assume that the first thing one might object to in his case would be the BDSM thing. But that’s not the case. I’m objecting here to his caveman mentality toward women as valued strictly according to their hotness factor, and as mechanisms whose sole purpose is to reflect titty-shaped light patterns into a video camera. I have come across some pigs in my day, but I have never come across a piggier pig than this pig.
