Harris VP choice as she is the official presidential nominee of the Democratic Party for 2024

Kaine wasn’t a problem. Quayle is hard to explain – I have no idea how he got picked, but his major liability was that he wasn’t very bright, which American voters never seem to have a problem with (cite: Trump). Palin is clear evidence that the vetting process can be hasty and can put inappropriate weightings on the pluses and minuses. McCain wanted a woman on the ticket, he got one, and the lunatic he got probably cost him the election. So yes, there’s reason to worry, though from what little I know about them I have no problem with any of the front-runners except Shapiro. I’d be fine with Kelly, Walz, or Beshear.

He was much like Palin. He was a young and energetic contrast to Bush, and Ronald Reagan even complimented Quayle for that in his waning months as president. The pick was immediately controversial, and the same issues that plagued him through the campaign and later through his time as VP were there right from the very beginning. The campaign thought he’s look like a good contrast to Bush.

I’m glad that the potential picks we’re being shown for Harris’s VP all have more substance than that.

There was nothing wrong with Kaine personally, but his selection violated the basic rule that if you’ve just had a bitterly divisive primary battle between two factions of the Party, the winning side needs to use the VP pick to offer an olive branch to the losing side. Fortunately that rule doesn’t apply to the current situation.

Fair point, but I’d say Kaine was more of a safe choice than anything else. It wasn’t a vetting failure. I think Palin was a Hail Mary choice for a struggling campaign, and the state of analysis has advanced significantly since Quayle.

That’s not to say a good choice is guaranteed. But I’m quite sure Harris’s team is aware Shapiro is Jewish and has offered opinions on a controversial topic.

I’ve seen speculation elsewhere that Kaine was her choice because her case against Trump was pretty much, hey, you should vote for me, instead of Trump, if you want calm competence from a sensible policy wonk. And — since picking someone like me is, as it happens, the correct call — I, too, have just now chosen a fellow Straight-A student and sane pragmatist who fits that bill! See? This is me, demonstrating that I believe the point I’m making! I picked the kind of person that I’m saying you should pick!

Summary

So have the others:

Who’s Afraid of Josh Shapiro?

Read the whole linked article above to see how much of a myth it is that Shapiro is softer on Natayahu than others being vetted.

My guess is that if someone other than Shapiro is the veep pick, said individual will make pro-Israel statements to show that the Genocide Josh slurs were not the reason they were selected.

A Bloom County blast from the past (1988)

But Walz’ dealings with the encampments at his State’s university were much more nuanced. Unlike Shapiro, he didn’t demonize the protestors, and he at least acknowledged that there were serious free speech issues involved in banning public demonstrations.

Summary

Oh, fuck that. The idea that the Israelis actually care about civilian casualties but just “aren’t doing a good job” of avoiding them is risible. And applauding a man with outstanding warrants for war crimes from the ICJ? Unacceptable.

That is actually the best method.

I’ve read that multiple VP choices besides Shapiro have canceled weekend events…?

Exactly. It’s the kickoff for her first major campaign leg. She’ll want her surrogates on the stump for her, wherever they are. And the Governor of the state where she’s making the launch will naturally be there in person, I would think.

That doesn’t mean Shapiro won’t be the choice, but we shouldn’t read too much into the fact that he changed his plans.

Beshear and Shapiro at least. No one wants to tip the hand.

Betting market did though …

I, too, would like to see him follow a path through the state department. He speaks multiple languages, and would make a fine chief diplomat. Plus, that level of experience can serve as a stepping stone to the presidency.

Lincoln had only 2 years in Congress, more than a decade prior, plus time in the Illinois State House, before becoming president. But he had innate intelligence and exceptional communication skills, and was a great president.

I personally feel the same way about Pete Buttigieg. I think he’s sufficiently brilliant that he doesn’t need a bunch of years in office to be ready to succeed as president.

Walz is my guy here, but at this point I predict Shapiro.

True enough, but no former cabinet member has ascended to the presidency since Herbert Hoover.
