Harris VP choice as she is the official presidential nominee of the Democratic Party for 2024

They’re not as wise as I am, everybody knows that.

Has anybody made the observation that Shapiro might put FL into play. Having a Jewish running mate almost worked for Al Gore (heck, maybe it did). I’m just saying that the folks that look at the negatives might not be seeing the potential upside.

Splitting some hairs:

Both Director of National Intelligence (CIA Director before 2004) and Ambassador to the U.N. are Cabinet-rank positions (though outside the line of succession). George H.W. Bush (41st President) held both positions at different times during the 1970s under Nixon and Ford.

You’re completely correct that no executive department heads since Hoover have become President.

It’d have to do a lot; Trump beat Biden by over 3% of the vote (570K votes) in 2020. And, my understanding is that most of the Jewish population in Florida is already a fairly reliable blue vote, and that people who identify as Jewish are only about 3% of the state’s population.

That is two more than Mayor Pete- and Lincoln was not a member of a despised minority. Look, I like the guy, and maybe Harris can give him a higher job or he can run for something.

I said it upthread (or maybe in another thread) and I’ll say it again: In this campaign, Pete needs to be the level-headed, logical, low-key assassin on the talk show circuit. Of course, Fox probably won’t have him on much, because he destroys them every time he appears on that network.

Yep. He can be the “bad guy” saying things that Harris cant say, but saying them so well.

In government Hoover was only a cabinet member before he became president. Bush was a congressman before he was ambassador to the UN and CIA Director. And more importantly, he was Vice President before he became President.

Oh more than that- Hoover led the wartime Commission for Relief in Belgium, a great success, and especially Hoover led the federal response to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, and served as the director of the U.S. Food Administration, aslo setting up radion, air travel, and a lot more. Hoover was a great man. But not such a great President.

Director of CIA has only been a cabinet-level position since Trump’s time, according to Wikipedia, so Bush wouldn’t qualify:

Cabinet level positions

I remember how disappointed I was with Kaine in the debate with Pence. Can anyone remember anything he said during that debate - or elsewhere? Heck, we all remember the freaking FLY more! His whole schtick was that he was a competent “nice guy.” But he wasn’t even willing to directly point out the Trump/Pence “weirdness”! (That Walz guy is growing on me!)

I think we are at a point where the Dems CAN benefit from directly pointing out the weirdness - and meanness, etc - of Trump and Vance and Trump’s agenda. Don’t have to get in the gutter, but like Walz said [paraphrased], “Just listen to some of the crazy stuff he says? Would be one thing if it were your crazy uncle at Thanksgiving. But is that who you want as President?”

Heck, look at his body posture and facial expressions. The way he was just slouching in the chair at the recent Black Journalists’ interview. Does that LOOK presidential? No. He’s just some weird, bullying slob, who advanced WAY further than he ought to have on merit.

I think Kelly or Walz would do a great job. I hate to be so chicken, but I fear Buttigieg or Shapiro at this time. Don’t know as much about Shapiro, but not sure they bring enough upside to outweigh the anti-gay/Jewish BS that would come. Hard to see a ready attack on Walz or Kelly.

As a lifelong IL resident, Pritzkjer seems to be doing a pretty good job. Heck, at least he hasn’t been indicted yet, which is unusual for IL pols! But I’m not sure what he brings to the ticket. (And I sure dislike those ugly “Pritzker sucks” yard signs I see all too often.)

pritzker said last night on the beat that he has cleared his schedule for the weekend as well.

The Reuters Poll places Kamala Harris 1pt ahead of Trump.

U.S. Senator and former astronaut Mark Kelly of Arizona had the highest favorability rating among this group at 32%, followed by governors Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania at 27%; Andy Beshear of Kentucky at 20%, J.B. Pritzker of Illinois at 14% and Tim Walz of Minnesota at 11%.

So Kelly has pulled ahead in the short time this has been going on.

Per NYT (according to people familiar with the process and who have viewed Harris’s schedule)…

I read that the vetting process by the law firm ended Thursday afternoon and results were given to Harris.

Harris wants to meet individually with some of them this weekend. They are canceling their plans to be available to meet (regardless if they will end up meeting or not to quell speculation re their chances).

Decision tentatively expected Tuesday evening.

Vibe check-in here. I swear I’m hearing more about Shapiro the last couple days than I was before. Pure vibe, just wondering if he is moving up in the rankings.

The rally is Tuesday evening. The decision has to happen prior to that. Given logistics, a couple of days before that. Given strategy, before Sunday morning so it can be discussed on the news shows. It has to be announced today or tomorrow.

It looks like he moved up while losing ground to Kelly.

Walz only seems to be popular here at the Dope.

She’s planning on meeting with the six finalists this weekend (Walz, Beshear, Kelly, Shapiro, Pritzker, Buttigieg), and announce on Tuesday.

And in the House.

I was gonna say, if she’s meeting with each one this weekend, she’s not going to make an announcement until after those meetings. That would be rude, even if she falls in love with one of them. But i got ninja’d.
