I swear I just read a post where Abe Sapien said who died. Was he joking? Did he really just spoil this book for me two hours and eight minutes before it’s in my hands?
He did.
He’s banned.
We’re serious here.
My goodness, that’s quick. And it answers my ATMB question at the same time.
When I reported Abe’s thread I did suggest he be slapped and sterilized. Thank you for heeding me.
Good and fast work!
Eh. Spoilers don’t really bother me. I’m interested more in the execution of what happens in spoilers, not who it happens to or whatever.
Damn. I didn’t suggest anything neato like that, but rather wasted those precious seconds linking to this thread.
Euty: You are serious here, and I reverence you for it. I
Actually I can’t take the credit. I had just gotten the e-mails and by the time I got here someone else had already deleted the thread and banned them. Good work, whoever!
I saw that spoiler in the Pit too and boy was I angry. Thank you from me, too.
Sorry, Qadgop, but Internet technology hasn’t advanced quite to the point wher your reasonable request can be fulfilled. I guess you’ll have to settle for a permanent quarantine!
I was one of what appear to be about five people who saw the spoiler thread in the Pit and promptly reported it – I had to go through the process twice, because the “report this thread” module of the software was too busy to accommodate my first report – only time I’ve ever seen that happen!
Yes, but sometimes you really can’t appreciate the execution if you know the result.
One of the Ruth-Rendell-as-Barbara-Vine novels starts out clearly stating that eleven years earlier, someone was killed, but that person is not named. The story plays out in flashbacks, and all along, everything but everything seems to indicate that it will be character X who dies. My jaw absolutely hit the floor when it turned out to be character Y. Character X has “kill me” tattooed on her forehead throughout the whole story, but the way Rendell/Vine works it out, circumstances get tweaked just enough to put Y on the block instead. No way would I have enjoyed that if I’d known it was going to be Y.
Now as far as Piltdown Man (I won’t call him a “sapien”):
All hail Euty!
I didn’t see the thread, but I wonder…was he right or wrong? No, I don’t want to know what he said; not now, anyway. But after I’ve read it, I just might e-mail someone who did see the thread and ask them if he had it right.
As a Scholastic employee I heard many rumors and bits about the book, a delay over a plotline issue was not one of them. My understanding was more along the lines of Ms Rowling getting out and enjoying her well earned fortune more often, reducing the time spend on writing a bit. Far be it from me to fault the lady for getting a life.
In addition:
Considering the recent history of Scholastic stock
1 week: -0.48%
1 month: -0.86%
1 year: -21.11%
I would tend to think Scholastic would be fighting to get those books moving ASAP so the cash starts coming in.
I signed up for the waiting list for *The Order of the Phoenix[/x] this week, and I’m proud to be 262nd on it. I am hoping I can avoid temptation until the book falls into my hands, but I’m not sure I’m strong enough. Eutychus, thanks for the pre-emptive strike. I’m sure if I look around here in CS, I can find all relevant plot points but I will be strong. I think. Maybe just one thread. . .
CJ
Actually, thanks for pointing that out. I think I lost the plot completely at 8:25 PM. (weird for me, though not really) Yes, I did indeed mean to say Order of the Phoenix… though if you want to keep the surreal quality of this spoiler box thread, we can say that I did that on purpose.

Fair enough, and I’ve seen similar works. But it can be true the other way as well. After all, we all know about Rosebud, we all know about Soylent Green, we all know about To Serve Man, we all know that the boat sinks at the end, and so on, but, at least for the ones that are good (while Citizen Kane and either Knight’s short story or the Twilight Zone episode are definitely good works, I’m not so sure about Soylent Green, but in any case I’m making a point here) the execution of how you get there is part of the fun. In fact, I already knew long ago about Rosebud, and the first time I finally saw Citizen Kane was less than a month ago, yet I was entranced because it was how Welles got there that was interesting, not what the answer was.
I guess my point is, is this the kind of spoiler that wrecks an entire work or the kind that has no effect? I guess it would depend on the person reading it to some degree as well.
I bought mine on Saturday, but does it come out later in the US or something?! It’s very good so far… too much angst though.
It came out on Saturday in the US, but due to time zone differences, it was out a few hours earlier in the UK. Which was time enough, apparently, for some idiot to find out who died and post it here.
Either that, or he somehow got his hands on a copy before Saturday.
I would love to, but you have disabled the Email-functionality via the board.
Regards,
Myriam
been there, done that, read Harry Potter 5
Ok, I didn’t even know someone was going to die until I just read it in a freaking thread title. Then I came in here to complain about it and Euty went and spoiled it in the post about not spoiling it.
>:(
You mean whatever it was that he posted was true?
