Harry Potter book 5 cover - thoughts?

I was surprised nobody had posted this yet (unless of course I managed to miss it). Now that the “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” cover has been revealed, I’m wondering what people think of it.

It’s very…blue. Looks darker than the others, and Harry looks quite a bit older. Seems in keeping with the supposedly darker tone of the book itself. Not too many clues, though–not unless they’re on the back cover.

Any impressions?

I have my doubts that that’s the real cover. It looks more like a sales poster to me - it’s entirely different than the previous 4 covers.

It looks like he’s wandering someplace (Hogwarts?) at night and someone may be following him. Or maybe he’s been imprisoned somewhere and he’s sneaking around trying to escape. Could it be the Malfoy family home? Anyway, that’s what I get from the picture. I can’t wait to see how far wrong I am.

Thanks for the link, I didn’t even know the cover had been released.

Of course, another question- Is ‘The Order of the Phoenix’ meaning an Order in the sense of an organization, or in the sense of a command?

Amazon.co.uk has a different cover. I like the cover for the Adult edition better, though.

…Or in the sense of a happymeal? (I’d like an order of phoenix and a coke…)

Arrr, I’d guess Order in the sense of an organization. The counter-team to You-Know-Who and his Death Eaters.

Dumbledore, Harry, Hermione, Ron (and his parents, possibly his brothers), Snape (playing double agent for Dumbledore), Sirius, Hagrid, McGonagall, maybe a few others.

Mission Impossible with magic. Ah yeah.

I’d be surprised if the Amazon UK covers were the real book covers. Didn’t the preceding books feature Harry and/or some combination of characters? Maybe it’ll be a combination of the OP and the phoenix. A couple of months and we will find out.

The Leaky Cauldron posted links to these too, so it’s not just Amazon. (Though I can’t seem to get to the BBC page…I’m curious now!)

I like the American version much better than the British versions (a first, I think; I like the other covers equally well)…I love that shade of blue. Can’t wait until June!

This new article talks about it.

Harry Potter 5 Covers

Yes, the article says those are the British covers. The American covers are a lot more… busy, usually featuring some representation for virtually every major event in the story (Goblet’s cover was stuffed back and front).

As for British vs. American, I think the British covers have more style, but I still like the American covers better. It’s satisfying to finish the story and then look all over the cover and suddenly all the illustrations on it make sense. Unfortunately, while the American covers are good, the small quarter page illustrations featured at the beginning of each chapter are… usually kinda sucky, IMO.
