Yeah - when FCD began his search for a big dog, he read up on Newfies, then found some videos posted by a groomer who did Newfies. OMG - you could build a new one from the coat that they blow!!!
My dentist just called - they have a cancellation at 7:30 tomorrow, so I get to go in a week early! YAY!
Commercial: ‘Frank’s Red Hot. I put that sh*t on everything!’
I don’t. I pretty much only use it for hot wings. But this morning I decided to be different. I put Frank’s in my breakfast burrito instead of Tapatio. Meh.
Shopping is done and Jersey Mike’s #3 has been consumed, so my Moanday morning routine is complete. Will now go forth and tidy up the kitchen some before heading off to the gym for a while.
Cookie, enjoy the apple picking…I picked apples this morning…albeit out of a bin at Kroger.
Pilot, sounds like a successful Sunday in all aspects.
rocky, thanks for the reminder, need to pick up the goodies for the Trick-or-treaters this week lest I be caught rummaging through the leftovers; just need to hide them well enough that I don’t eat them up early…and probably should watch that video, not that I’ll follow it’s instructions, but hopefully it will encourage me to get started.
Well, I certainly don’t want to be a snake in the grass…
Knots, that must have been quite the aromatic air at that place.
FCM, hope getting up that early is worth having the dentist mess around in your mouth…
And heading into the afternoon. Still cloudy but on 75F now so the AC may get a full day off.

I’m currently in the office, but will be going home in less than two hours: I have an “emergency” voice lesson at 3pm (prep for Sunday’s chorale audition). It’ll be virtual, but of course I can’t do it from here. My next meeting is at 1pm, and I’ll head south as soon as it’s over. I’m hoping the drive home will only take ~40 min, so I have time to log back in and set my Teams status to “away” before my lesson starts.
No harvest festivals for me. I’ve always been a suburban person, definitely tending more urban than rural (except the two years my family lived in England, when we were surrounded by working farms…helping my best friend feed a trailer full of abandoned lambs was fun until one of them peed on my foot ).
Nothing exciting to report from yesterday. I did wind up ordering a pizza for lunch, and had leftovers for dinner; I’ll have the last two slices for dinner again tonight. I couldn’t watch the Yankees game on either network TV or via any of the streaming services I already have, which is just as well because we got our butts whupped by the Blue Jays again. If we don’t win tomorrow night’s game – which I also won’t be able to watch – our postseason will be over.
Wishing you good car karma tomorrow!
S4 is out, but I haven’t gotten around to watching it yet. S1 and S2 were genius, but S3 was disappointing…and I’ve heard mixed reviews about S4. I’ll check it out eventually.
That’s one of my favorite tricks for staying organized: if I had to look something, I don’t put it back where I found it – it goes in the first place I looked for it.
Went to work today, and decided to leave 30 minutes early. If I had to, I could have stayed later, but it wasn’t necessary. I’m a bit tired.
Not exactly harvest-related, but most of the cows have come down from the mountains, so the mountain cheese is now available for sale at the farmer’s market and the fall carnival. Pumpkin festivals, which include big figures made out of pumpkins, are becoming more popular, as is pumpkin soup, pumpkin curry, pumpkin bread (think sourdough, but with pumpkin), etc. The last Friday in October is apple tart day, where apple tarts, apple cider, applewhatever, is sold at stalls set up in many towns and cities.
I’ve been in the middle of Zurich and seen a tractor go by with hay. There’s no escaping farm country in Switzerland.
I’m currently based at a place that does agricultural research, so I’m definitely aware of harvest, even if I’m not involved much. We get some free produce and some for donations.
I’ve been growing some of my own stuff at home as well, though as it’s the first year here it’s not been a huge crop, especially as lots of things went in late. I got myself a polytunnel, but I didn’t get it up til mid June, which was much later than planned. As is the traditional cry of the gardener, hopefully next year!
I’m pretty happy with it. Hoping to get the rest of the room around it figured out before too long. On the back side there’s a window, so you can see what’s happening, also so’s we can get out stuff the kids are going to try to stuff down the holes.
I tried to put in a short video of what it sounds like, but discourse was grumpy with that.
I always try to get the first appointment of the day - get it over with, yanno! And it’s pretty much just a cleaning and a once-over. Xrays were done last time, and I don’t have any issues, so it’s generally a quick in and out. I’ve set up Alexa to wake me at 6 so I can shower, dress, and breakfast before I have to leave. It’s in Leonardtown, so no more than 20 minutes, even in the morning commute.
Then at noon, Otis goes to our vet for his once-over. I’ll be going along, too, since I doubt FCD will remember to ask all the questions I have. I just hope I remember!!!
Got a call from BIL today - he was having problems logging into his VISA account all of a sudden. I couldn’t help him over the phone, so we went over and I got him straightened out. I suspect the bank updated its software and the saved login was purged. Luckily, it was an easy fix.
And it was the first time in months that FCD talked to his brother. I’m pretty sure the main cause of friction was BIL hadn’t been taking his meds. But he’s in a program now where he gets visits 3 times a week, some for meds, some for counseling, and he’s doing a lot better. So he’s less likely to be kicked out of his apartment. (A year ago, it seemed imminent, so whew!)
And if you have BritBox and are looking for a rather sweet sitcom, check out As Time Goes By. I just finished it today and along with starring Dame Judi Dench, who I love, it’s not over-the-top like some Brit sitcoms. Some of it gets a tad silly, but mostly it’s just fun.
OK, Alexa just told me to take my meds. I will comply.
(If @fachverwirrt lived in my neighborhood, he’d definitely appreciate my closed windows! LOL!)
I can assure you, no matter how bad you may think you are, I’ve heard worse. At least you practice.
On the subject: last weekend was opening weekend at the symphony. Our hall was under renovation for two seasons while we were forced to perform in less-than-acoustically-ideal spaces. The work is done and our grand reopening was a success.
(If you’re interested, you can go here and listen (the piece featuring the chorus starts at about 33 minutes in): recording.
Yesterday was the opening concert for another group I sing with, which also went well, although there was some drama with the finger cymbals.
I’m on fall break, so today was a lazy day after two concert weekends. Tomorrow I should probably bring my car in to address a slow leak in one tire.
There used to be a lot of mint farming around Bremen, IN too. One of my friends had the rehearsal dinner for her wedding at the Mint Still there. According to Google, it’s long closed.
I dropped the printer at Staples for recycling and exchanged the CO2 cartridge so’s I can continue to have fizz water for my day’s achievement. My package from da Jungle came in and now I’m wearing new slippers with a sole! They’re comfy. I also got the lipstick that I ordered that will look good with my pink stuff.
Once home, I sorted some more photos (I’m on carton 3 of 6) and assembled 3 Valentine cards. Now for chillage.
Howdy Y’all! Stuff got unloaded and we brunched. Just after we got back to da cave, there was a big rain for almost an hour. Then nappage was achieved. The rain cranked up again around three and we day drank out on the back porch with watchin’ it. All in all a pleasant day.
doggio a cotton gin does not turn cotton into gin. Sorry to bust your bubble.
MOOOOOOM I have seen “As Time Goes By “ on PBS, but probably have not seen the whole series. Might need to check it out on Brit Box.
We went to our first harvest festival last week, apple butter and honey are in season this time of the year.
I “work” at a produce shop and am learning about what is in season and when. While we had a good variety of produce back in AZ, I have never before had corn that was actually sweet before. I like eating closer to the farm.
Today was pretty non-eventful. After Hubs had time to think about it, he realized that we know where everything comes into and out of the house and that there is no power going to the satellite dish. Plus he has a thingy to test if a line has power and it didn’t. He also told me that it would be simple to take the dish off the pole, but that didn’t happen. I expect the Hydrangea to grow about a foot a year, so if he doesn’t do it this year, it won’t happen.
Narrator: It never happens.
So my bushes are both in the ground, the anti-weed-wacker rings are in place and I mulched with straw. We are supposed to get some rain tomorrow which will help water them in.
I have recently realized that we are still going to have to change our clocks again next month. I hated it when we didn’t change our clocks because all of the rest of the country did so I had to keep track on time changes AND DSL when making calls. At least we are retired now, all we have to keep track of is the no-drive half-hour when school is in session.
That looks very solid and well built, I hope the kids love it!
I think barley bread is great stuff. Have you ever tried it with brewer’s yeast? I did that once and it was pretty amazing, the brewer’s yeast just added a little something.
Mrs. L.A. didn’t want anything for dinner because she was… well, let’s just say she was up all night with ‘gastrointestinal issues’. So I made myself a salad for dinner: Romaine lettuce, red onion, tomato, kalamata olives, feta, and sugar-free balsamic vinaigrette.
Evening all - About 2045 as I start driveling in the dark. Full Moon is just before midnight Eastern tonight. Very pretty when it’s not hidden by all the rainclouds.
After a late breakfast I sent GF on her way about 2pm, then killed some laundry. Went out for a late & quick solo dinner: chicken parm w a split burrata atop, and rigatoni on the side. Now home and lazing towards bed.
Tomorrow starts with an 0830 dermo visit to admire his recent handiwork. Which is healing up nicely. Should be in & out quickly with a few sprays of cold nitrogen on any incipient nasties. After that I have some travel arrangements to make, and maybe a yak w somebody. Should be a mostly cloudy rain-filled week here. But hurricane-free which is always nice.
Like FCM I greatly prefer first thing appointments for all things medical. They haven’t had time yet to become delayed, so I show up on time, am seen on time, and leave on time. Yaay!
Also my sense is that early AM they’re all motivated to hustle to get ahead of schedule a bit. The staffers are all perkier & friendlier too. By 3 pm when everything is an hour late a sense of weary futility permeates the office and lateness just keeps getting worse. While I and everyone else in the waiting room is fuming and the hate waves are so think you can see them.
Said another way, you need a vacuum w a bigger container. After all, he’s going to become a bigger dog.
I’m sure FCD understood that picking up the dog hair is also an essential part of dog care he was going to be responsible for. Right? Riiight?
Good luck at the vet. I find making a list of questions to ask helps me a lot. I put the list in the Outlook calendar item for the appointment. I’ll be referring to that anyhow as I’m planning my day and when leaving to go to the appointment, and it’ll be sitting as a reminder on my phone’s lock screen, so it’s easy enough for even absent-minded me to remember to refer to it during the appointment.
Hooray for BIL getting onto a more even keel. When we got real pro oversight over late aged MIL’s meds and eating, her situation improved dramatically for much the same reasons. Good luck for continued good outcomes.
Smell our Dairy Air! For me it was more like a mile, but well within bike range even as an pre-tween.
I’m w you.
Frank’s is the perfect flavor for wings. After you add a bunch more heat. But useless for anything else, and especially anything even vaguely Mexican. Tapatio or Valentino FTW unless you want serious hot, then El Yucateca’s habanero (roasted red or raw green) is my go-to.
@Misnomer: congrats on the lesson and good luck at the audition. I bet you’ll be awesome as always.
Welcome back JtC!!
This isn’t exactly a harvest festival … But when we lived in St. Louis one of the nearby small towns held this every summer and we considered it a must-do event:
Yeah, I have different salsas for different foods. My ‘breakfast burritos’ are two strips of bacon, an over-easy egg, and shredded medium cheddar, in a Carb Balance Whole Wheat tortilla. So the only ‘Mexican’ thing might be the tortilla. Otherwise, it’s American. Since it’s American, a Louisiana-style sauce is directed. (Louisiana-style: Peppers, salt, and vinegar; e.g., Tabasco.) But I like Tapatio in them. Aside from Tapatio and Tabasco, my other ‘go-to’ sauce is Sriracha. I have some ‘weird’ salsas. (I don’t know. ‘Alien Sauce’ or something, and a couple of others. One came with a skull keychain that I may or may not still have.) I haven’t tried them yet. I should, because I like a lot of heat. Gets the endorphins going. I just never think of them because I have Sriracha, Tabasco, and Tapatio very much at-hand. I also have some Pickapeppa sauce (‘Jamaican ketchup’), but I only use it on the rare occasion that I get a rotisserie chicken. I used to have Tiger Sauce, but It wasn’t anything special. I only got it because The Spousal Unit said once that she liked it. I’m reminded, for some reason, of Cholula ‘Hot Sauce’. They’re half-right. It’s a sauce.
Up from naptime, having an Old Fashioned, burger and fries.
So they rolled out the RFID stuff last week. Saturday the dome were beeping when I loaded correct packages, and didn’t beep when I tried to provoke it. Today the one PT Sup was looking in the package car I was loading for a misload, and the Zebra gun Geiger counter was going off, even though the packages were labeled correctly. Plus half the week old RFID label printers have gone down. Fun times.
I use Tabasco(regular and Chipolte), but I’d like to find a good Aja Amarillo sauce.
My Bartlett pear tree went nuts this year and gave me bushels of delicious pears. All the fruit trees lived it up this year! I was trading pears and apples for plums and cherries. We all made out like bandits. I’m glad you got your Oregon pear fix, at least!
Thanks for the heads-up! I’m working my way through S3 now. Not hating it so far. It’s early, though.
I come from farming families on both sides. Some of my earliest memories are of heading to my maternal family’s dry land wheat farm/cattle and sheep ranch in summers to help with harvests and brandings. In the autumn and spring, we helped pick rock. Worst… job… ever!
My maternal grandparents were the hardest workers I ever knew. In addition to keeping the farming and ranching operations going, they grew a massive vegetable garden, kept a Guernsey cow for milk, cream, cheese and butter, chickens for meat and eggs, rabbits for Angora fur, which they sold, and meat.
On my father’s side, they farmed spuds. Also kept chickens for eggs and meat and kept a respectable vegetable garden. Not like on my mother’s side, though.
All the menfolk hunted on both sides, and a fair number of the women did, too.
So… I come by knowing the planting and harvesting times naturally. I’ve always kept even small kitchen gardens when I lived in a more suburban setting. After we moved to Oregon, my husband and I kept a large vegetable garden like we both were raised to do. Walking through our gardens were like trips to the produce aisle in a grocery store. I couldn’t keep it up after he died, not with a full-time business, but I still twitch on President’s Day. That’s when peas are planted in this zone.
Everything grows here, and agriculture is a huge part of the state’s economy. They celebrate harvests all season long.
Yeeksadoodle! Today was one of those days where it seems like I was busy all day but could hardly say what kept me that way.
There was laundry. A trip to town for banking and gassing up the car. Dithered over how to set up new VoIP phone services and received much help from others, including pilot. (Thanks, good sir!)
Dinner was a healthful stir fry with chicken, broccoli, red pepper, chili flakes and onion with garlic and ginger over Basmati rice. Enough left over for tomorrow night, too. That’s good, because I’ll be busy making cinnamon rolls for my friend and his father-in-law who are coming to finish up the plumbing project on Wednesday morning. It will be so nice to have my driveway back without big holes to dodge!!
