Has anybody here ever been banned from a forum/website?

I was banned from an IRC chatroom on Dalnet because it seemed I had cussed out a moderator (I fell for a trojan horse program and someone was typing through it. I was young, stupid, and got off pretty easy all things considered). Came back to that chatroom a year or so later and nobody remembered the incident.

I was banned from an AOL chatroom for saying that I love to eat sushi. They banned me for inappropriate language. I had no idea that Japanese was considered inappropriate!

CNN.com is horribly racist on this topic as well apparently based on this story they just published. Black albinos have some very issues in east Africa as in the have to go in hiding and be protected because other Africans want to chop off their body parts to use in witchcraft (not kidding).

I never have been banned from a web site personally though.

All three words contain the banned word “ass”.

That’s probably what it was. Nowadays, we have smarter software that makes it easier to find out if an IP or IP range contains legitimate posters. You were not intentionally banned, and if you didn’t receive an apology then, I apologize on behalf of the moderating staff now for that incident.

I haven’t been banned from a message board (yet), but my friends and I got kicked out of church camp when I was 15. That’s the best I got.

I actually got banned from a forum just yesterday, as a matter of fact.

A few weeks or so ago, to try to understand the insane right-wing mind, I started lurking on the Hannity forums. Eventually, the sheer stupidity got to me, so I registered (I think it was a thread on evolution that got me). When I joined, I made it a point to obey the letter of the law on that forum, but to not hold back. I never started any threads- all I did was respond. Most of my posts were actually quite serious- I’d try to give factual answers as much as possible. I must admit that I did respond snarkily to particularly stupid examples of “Libruls are teh evil!!!11!!!”, though.

Anyway, fairly early on I got accused of being a “retread”- basically, what we call a “sock puppet” here. What surprised me is that this accusation is fairly common, and the accused are never accused of being a retread of anyone in particular. Another interesting thing is that there’s a subforum devoted specifically to reporting other members to the mods. So as a result of arguing with someone, that person reported me as a retread. One of the mods checked me out, though, and said I was okay.

So, yesterday, I got into another argument… and when I came back from a bike ride, I found that I’d been IP banned. I wasn’t too surprised. According to the rules, though, I was supposed to be able to argue my case in the mod forum- kind of hard to do if you’ve been banned. So I made another account, clearly labeled as a “responding to the ban” account (and quoted the rule which allowed me to do so), and asked politely, “If I’m a retread, who am I supposed to be a retread of?”

The mod who banned me replied with, “We’re not going to give you the satisfaction of seeing your name here, you know who you are.”- and banned my new account. Apparently, if they don’t like what you’re saying, they accuse you of being a retread to get rid of you.

TL;DR- I was banned from the Hannity forums for being a Liberal.

I got banned almost immediately for trolling on the Blazin’ Squad messageboard. Which indeed I was, and had joined for the express purpose of doing (my chosen moniker, “Blazin’ Squid”, was a bit of a giveaway).

In my feeble defense, I maintain that a messageboard in which 85% of the posts consist of “lololol” followed by a signature block five inches deep of pictures of pimply idiots, flashing multicolored text and animated smilies can only be improved by creative trolling.

I got banned from the MacRumors forum two weeks ago for flaming a guy who posted a really stupid “The bad economy is Obama’s plan to cause civil unrest which he will use for an excuse to invoke martial law and create a police state” screed. I’m not ashamed to say, I went off on his ass. I had his 'nads for lunch with Pepsi-Cola and pretzels. The next day, I’m locked out for two weeks. My ban is up December 2, and if His Nibs expects an apology, he’s got a long, long wait.

I have been banned from the mothering.com messageboards for being pro-vaccination. Of course, they have a sticky there that states that pro-vaccination posts do not help the ‘discussion’, which should have tipped me off.

Regards,
Shodan

I’m impressed by the scarcity here of people who admit they had it coming.

Well, it seems to me that it’s specifically because most people don’t get banned from websites. If they do get banned from one, odds are it wasn’t their fault (since they’ve never been banned before).

Now, what would be impressive is someone who gets banned a LOT and who still claims that none of the bannings were his fault.

I sorta had it coming with my ban, in that what they explicitly banned me for was somewhat jerkish. Not that I wasnt the only jerk there.

But mostly, IMO it was because they didnt like me raining on their parade. And I dont think they were really into warning or suspensions either. Just one day, your banned ! And of course the popular people were NEVER banned.

When I administered a board a long time ago we had real problems with people spamming from AOL accounts. I tried to follow a path of gentle discouragement by keeping the blocks somewhat tight and hope they went away before it caused problems but in a few cases I had to block entire B blocks for a few days and try to white list in the people caught in the crossfire.

I’d bet the same thing happened in your case. They tried to minimize the impact of the block at first but had to keep escalating until they were blocking huge chunks. So while I’m not personally responsible for yours I do want to apologize on behalf of message board administrators who have had to take extreme measures in the past.

Oh, I totally had it coming. Before I posted what I did, I thought about whether there were any other posts I wanted to make first, because I knew my banning would be pretty swift. It being the kind of Mommy Board I’m not that fond of anyhow, there weren’t any, so I fired away.

I was banned from Free Republic after one post, a post in which I said that were I involved in an anti-war protest and happened to be attacked by a Bush apologist I wouldn’t run home to mother because I’m a pacifist as suggested by the post to which I was replying. I said I would drop my attacker like third period French and that the pacifists would be the ones pulling me off my assailant.

Apparently disagreeing with Bush apologists is a banning offense at the amusingly-named Free Republic.

I got banned from a local radio station’s message board. They had no idea what they were doing. The message board was taken down shortly thereafter.

Not banned per se, but an email list I used to participate on was departed by me in a serious funk … back when mrAru was active duty, on a sub and in a war zone a number of the people there told me that they hoped his sub got sunk because war is immoral/ I am still trying to wrap my mind around the type of person that would tell someone that they hope that your relative gets killed …:mad:

I admit, and you are right to call me on it, I broke the rules. But, I have to say, the guy had it coming. Most of the time I can be civil and not get personal, but everybody has their breaking point.

To tell you the honest truth, I was kinda pleased with myself. I’ve never been banned from any board in over twenty years of BBSing and websurfing!

I got temporarily banned from the IGN/VN boards for posting porn. Haha! Actually, I posted a link to another site (I forget what for, the site was totally safe for work) and since I was using Firefox, have Adblock installed, and don’t see popups I had no idea there were porn popups on the site. Oops. It was years ago now. I was mortified.

I follow a bunch of local news/culture blogs, and some of them have godawful comment systems. Logs you off randomly, loads comments slowly, etc. I said as much in a Twitter post, calling out three by name. I got a response from one that basically said “Here, I’ll save you the trouble of dealing with it” and was banned. After e-mailing back-and-forth with the editor all goddamn day, I was re-instated. I honestly didn’t care too much about losing access to commenting on this site, but the editor was convinced I was some kind of lowlife troll, so I defended myself against that, because I didn’t want the incestuous local blogging community thinking that of me (being that I am a member).

I’d link to the site, but they’d probably check the referrer and ban me again for daring criticize them again.

Ironic?
