Has Hillary committed political suicide?

Keith Olbermann just listed all the times she has been forgiven with her gaffes, unintentional or not.

No longer.

Is the latest Olbermann online yet? I’m not finding it at MSNBCs site.

To you both, I would if I could better ascertain his ties to the virulently anti gun Daley machine here in Chicago. I know it’s mostly rhetoric at this point but I see the continued erosion of rights as a cumulative loss. A slight regain in one arena does not offset the loss in another. But I don’t want to hijack this further, and I’m not voting for McCain no matter what, so it’s not that big of a deal.

Sorry, luc, but I have to disagree somewhat on how innocent this is. It seems inconceivable to me that the thought, “Well, if he DID get assassinated, then the nomination would be mine” hasn’t floated through Clinton’s mind more than once, and more frequently as the primary season draws to such a frustrating (for her) end. Of course she’s staying in because “anything can happen,” and of course one of those anythings is Obama being taken out – crazed gunmen are, after all, as American as apple pie.

So, when pressed yet again on why she goes on – and she’s getting pressed harder and harder these days – she goes into her “anything can happen” mode, and unfortunately for her, this particular anything slips out in her out-loud voice.

I’m not saying she’s actively seeking or hoping for Obama’s assassination, but I find it impossible to believe that there isn’t some part of her thwarted ambitions that’s entertaining the prospect.

Hillary’s campaign has been running on fumes, so it’s not surprising that she’s apparently inhaled some.

“Keeping her options open”? Does anyone think that if (for example) health reasons prevented Obama from continuing as the nominee, she wouldn’t be next in line to take over the race? Why on earth would she possibly need to mention assassination?

More and more, she’s turning into a latter-day version of Richard Nixon - someone who’s so desperate for power that she’s proven herself utterly unworthy of holding it.

No.

Generally, you don’t see his transcript until the next business day. Being a long weekend, it may not appear until next Tuesday! But Crooks & Liars usually has a video up within a few hours, and MSNBC repeats Olbermann later.

I believe the show segments don’t get posted until after the show is over, perhaps not until the next day.

I assumed that since people are already quoting him, the show was over. I catch some of his stuff online, I never watch any news live.

But that’s precisely the point. She herself has indeed shopped that very same asassination shit at least 4 times* to the media. She did not use the A word every time, but the implication was clear.

Gaffes of the highest order.

Part One

Part Two

Countdown ran here in its its usual slot 8pm EDT. Tonight, as usual, I started watching at 8:30, to zip through the commercials.

Olbermann’s comments were so long (and so rabid) that he kept going when the show’s runtime ended.

But Olbermann, IMHO, preaches to the choir. I know, Cheney referred to Countdown semi-humorously, but he’s probably the only GOP-er who watches it.

But tonight Keith was pretty damned good.

Then again, maybe it was actually a threat. If you believe the rumors about Vince Foster…
no-sorry, even I can’t go there…

Dunno what the uproar is. Hillary is staying in the race because a) an act of god might make her the only candidate come the convention or b) this gives her a lot more leverage to secure the position she wants in the Obama administration.

Hillary is obviously of the “play the game to win until the clock runs out” school. I don’t see what’s so hard to understand about that nor why that should be considered “evil.”

Listen and watch what happens at about 1:36 into Part One. Seemingly meaningless in a different studio on a different subject, but in the context of the comment it scared Olbermann.

I noticed that too when it was on TV. It sounded like someone dropped a clipboard or something.

Olbermann is just over the top. And, don’t forget, I’m a rabid Obama voter, Liberal since the late 1960’s.

To say that this(mentioning assassination) was calculated on Hillary’s part is tinfoil hat territory.

Clinton’s strategy for the last few weeks has been simple: Stay in the race, establish that you’re the first runner up, and hope that something makes Obama drop out. So what she said was true. If Obama was assassinated like Bobby Kennedy was or if he got caught having an affair like Gary Hart was, then Clinton would be the obvious replacement for him.

But it was incredibly stupid of her to say this out loud. She should have kept on pretending that she felt she could beat Obama outright and never admitted that she needed Obama to lose in order for her to win at this point. Because there are plenty of people who can’t - or don’t want to - make the distinction between making plans based a possible event and hoping for that event.

Dumb dumb dumb.

I think the quotes, especially the second one, show that she was NOT saying somebody is going to kill Obama. She mentioned June in that one, too, and the tone was not of the “hey, anything can happen” variety. She was saying it’s not such an usual or bad thing for the race to last into June, and what’s everybody’s rush? Again, there’s really no comparing the primaries of 1968 and 2008, but she’s done it before and other than some whininess, it doesn’t say anything about her character.

And yes, someone probably did tell her “stop saying assassinated when you make this point, it’s jarring and really crass.” She forgot or blew it this time.

I think this was an incredibly insensitive thing for Hillary to say, but to argue that she is staying in the race in the hopes that Obama will be assassinated is just ludicrous.

I don’t think this is plausible, sorry. Assassination is one of those politically heavy terms that a politician worth his/her salt should know not to use flippantly. You make that mistake once and you don’t do it again, if you are competent and smart. Clinton is both (I think…I don’t really know at this point, though). Why is this a pattern for her?

I think this “gaffe” is a lot like the Jesse Jackson comment that deployed unexpectedly from Bill’s tongue earlier this year. It had the feel of a pre-formed talking point/meme that slipped out unintentionally, like a grenade meant for another battle that has dropped out of someone’s pocket.
