They air Rocko’s Modern Life at strange hours in the morning…
Nicktoons is not the same as Nick Jr…Nick Jr. is geared toward much smaller kids than the current Nicktoons are.
I miss Rocko’s Modern Life and the Angry Beavers, but is not as if I think all the new cartoons are bad. I certainly agree that they need to rotate them more and stop showing them again and again and again…
They start showing music videos telling the kids who they are supposed to like and what they are supposed to listen to starting at 2:00…they have more commercial tie-ins than I care to contemplate…
These days I’d almost rather my kids watched MTV than that crap. It’s horrid.
And I’m still pissed that they cancelled Danger Mouse.
Since Hama mentioned the commercial tie-ins, another thing just came to mind.
They started showing Pinky and the Brain reruns. Fine, I can deal with that (narf!) But throughout the opening credits, every single scenes is disfigured by that crappy orange Nickelodeon logo! I can’t even stand to see it anymore.
I think they air Rocko on their separate Nicktoons channel. I haven’t watched that channel much, but they have hour-long chunks of all those Nicktoons, like Ah! Real Monsters and The Angry Beavers, on there. They seem to have moved all of their programming onto separate channels. My family’s digital cable has something like 3 extra Nick channels. So silly…but at least I can watch my old game shows without having to sit through Sponge Bob.
But Eutychus, you want your kids to watch the Disney Channel instead? It’s almost as bad as Nickelodeon. Sure, it isn’t a constant gross-out, but it’s whiny preteen angst geared towards 12 year old girls who dream of being in high school and getting to wear lipstick, with the occasional “you can do anything!”-messaged movie. Bleh. Granted, they do tend to have slightly better programming than Nickelodeon, but is that really saying much?
I distinctly remember my best friend’s mom coming into the room while Pete & Pete was on and saying, “Ohmigod, it’s IGGY POP!”
I was but dimly aware at the time that Mr. Pop was some old rockero. It wasn’t until years later that I realized how strange and wonderful it was to have him on Pete & Pete as a suburban single dad. I consider the episode where he horrified his daughter by bursting into song at her school dance to be a high point in television history.
I’ll always have a warm place in my heart for you, Mr. Mecklenburg!
You’re all wrong. Sponge Bob Square Pants is one of the coolest cartoons ever (right up there with Space Ghost Coast To Coast and Dexter’s Laboratory), and whatever stuff they had to get rid of to make room for it is ok by me.
I used to plan my days around airings of “Pete an Pete”. Such a wonderful and rediculous program. I would kill to have all the episodes be released on DVD.
Nick GAS (Games and Sports) shows a lot of the old game shows. During the summer I was absolutely glued to the TV, except during Wild and Crazy Kids, which I never liked. It’s completely mindless and you can tell how small some of the shows’ budgets were, especially the first ‘Double Dare’.
And Nickelodeon has been showing the older shows as well, in the afternoon and at night. I’ve seen some episodes of Pete & Pete and Clarissa Explains it All.
Disney Channel is kind of annoying, too. Most of the shows completely glorify middle school/high school life; it’s nothing like I experienced. Like Lizzie McGuire. C’mon, her life is ideal! She kind of annoys me. So did that cheerleading ‘si se puedo’ movie a while ago.
[I have a younger brother…so I see a lot of Disney and Nick. But I was his age in the glory days of Nickelodeon. Aaah.]
Even earlier than some of those was “welcome freshman” and “hey Dude” (i think?) wasnt welcome freshman on nick but if you have noggin or the nicktoons channel you get most of the old shows and a couple of shows that were on MTV
It gets worse. Nickelodeon shows Animaniacs reruns too, but they replace the variable line in the intro song with “Nickeloonie” and replace the variable animation with Dot staring at a crystal ball with the Nickelodeon logo. That really pisses me off as part of the fun of watching Animaniacs is the variable line in the intro.
I guess it’s not enough for them to have their logo plastered in the corner of the screen the whole time.
Of course! Welcome Freshman! You know, I was young enough when that show began to think that Freshman was a person they were waiting for to come and visit the school. Like a building inspector or something!
