Hat advice wanted

I’m looking for a hat with a fairly broad brim to keep the sun off. But I have a huge head: 25 inch circumference = size 8 =3x hat size. I’ve given up trying to find a hat locally, looks like I’m going to have to order online (= mucho dinero). But before I pay $50-$90 dollars for a hat, do anyone know of any better options?

Gap and J. Crew have Panama Hats for under forty bucks. Great for keeping the sun off your neck. I don’t know how they are with plus-sizes, though.

I have done a lot of searching on Amazon, with mixed luck. Sunday Afternoons hats have a good range of styles and sizes. My husband and I have huge heads.

I’ll look around and see if I found anything else.

The other place I’ve had good luck finding this sort of thing is a nursery or garden center. You can try them on there and make sure they fit.

Tilleys.

Depends on where you live. I got a straw Amish-style hat years ago from a place called Amish Stuff in Lancaster; it has taken a serious beating and still looks great even after all these years. Avoid the ones sold by Lehmann’s – those are more for the tourist trade.

I have a Tilley and a couple hats from Sunday Afternoons – they’re good hats, but I don’t think they come in size 8.

I also have a Panama hat from Panama Hats Direct – they may or may not have your size in stock but you can order one made to your specifications. The hats ship from Ecuador, so it takes a while. They sell several different grades of hats and seem to be good value for the money.

I’ve got the same size 8 problems. In the Army they had to special order my helmet. Occasionally I’ve been able to find a hat in the right size in a store but it is rare. In my experience online is really your only option.

I was wrong. Tilley does come in size 8 and 8+. Be sure to read their sizing guide; Tilley hats fit differently than other hats and usual advice is to order up one size.

I have a Derby that’s too big for me if you want it.

I won’t turn it down if it’s big enough.

If you want a good quality hat to keep for life, expect to pay more than $50. Look at Stetsons and Borsalinos for genuine felt hats.

Best that no would be to find an actual hattery and het a knowledgeable hatter to help you choose.

My husband has a huge noggin too. I got him a ball cap and and a lightweight UV bucket hat from here and here.

Second link is to Big Head Caps, which I’ll second. Not a huge selection, but the caps fit nicely. (My bean is just under size 8.)

Found a very reasonably priced hat at www.lamoodbighats.com. Thanks all!
