Another one for Billy Joel…his output from Piano Man through The Nylon Curtain was/is for the most part nothing short of terrific (ESPECIALLY Turnstiles and The Stranger, easily my two favorite albums of his). And Joel could put on a damn great show back in the day to boot…both his 1977 Carnegie Hall and 1982 Long Island concerts are among my utmost favorite performances from anyone.
Steely Dan seems to get a lot of (IMO much undeserved) flack in various places, and I LOVE their music (and lyrics…it’s genius and awesome the biting stuff Donald Fagan has gotten away with underneath the presumed ‘easy listening’ texture). I particularly and personally prefer the more ‘trad jazzy’ stuff from Can’t Buy A Thrill through The Royal Scam over the ‘smooth jazz’ of Aja through Everything Must Go. BUT won’t deny that the latter has its chops…as a matter of fact, I’ve been downright addicted to “Glamour Profession” and its decadent atmosphere over the last couple of days, and could see it fitting in every bit as fine on The Royal Scam (which, actually, now that I think about it, was more-so transitional, and had a nicely done melding of trad jazz-esque style with just enough smooth…no wonder it’s tied with Countdown To Ecstasy for my favorite Dan album).
They’re hated?
I think I wore the grooves out on my copy of that LP
Bull, bull, bull…
By each and every one of my near and dear, anyway. ![]()
Big fan of Yes and Rush. Bite me.
Thanks for reminding me. Creed’s first album is actually pretty good.
The other side of the coin here is the fact that “enormously popular” means less than a tenth of the population is into it.
Noel Fielding versus David Tennant on the subject of Coldplay.
I’m with the Doctor on this one, personally.
Yeah, I love Billy Joel and I’ll go one step further.
His River of Dreams is one of the most solid albums out there. I think that isn’t even a popular one of his, but his last work of new music really was his best.
I wish he’d make more music.
Kanye West
Possible workaround: listen to them as Derek St Holmes albums instead. ![]()
AFAIK, Kanye is respected as an often-clever wordsmith. He gets love, for example, in the scholarly Anthology of Rap.
I’ve been told he is prone to clownish antics (“Ima gonna let you finish…”) – is that why he’s apparently considered uncool?
Do a thread search with “Kanye” in the title and you’ll see why he is an appropriate answer for this question on this board.
Hmmm…thanks, but I’m not seeing it. Lots of jerkish-behavior “controversies” here and there, and he clearly loves himself…kind of pro-Trump for a while last year, but not anymore…
I don’t mean to derail this thread, so I’ll leave it at that.
I was the same way. Mostly grew out of that by my mid twenties thank the gods.
Yes, I’ll take Nickelback.
The Ramones and the Sex Pistols are hated? Since when?
When it was 1978. It wasn’t until Indie music emerged and then evolved into Alternative (and Nirvana broke big) that Punk got mainstreamed.
My son (18) is a big Coldplay fan. For the last two years, his birthday gift has been tickets to see them live and he happily wears his concert shirt. I’m vaguely aware that they’re supposed to be hated but he shows no indication of this (or just doesn’t care). A while ago, he was texting the in the car and mentioned that the girl he was talking to was arguing with him about which one was the greater fan – obviously I just laughed and pointed out that both of the True Fans were still sleeping in cribs and diapers when Coldplay released their first album.
Absolutely. My point is, there ISN’T any act that “everybody” loves but you, or that “everybody” hates but you.
MOST people don’t love the Beatles. And tens of millions of people DO love Nickelback and Creed.
I don’t know if the Doors are hated, but Morrison certainly can be by a lot of people.
I still like them.
