I had a Coca-Cola today for the first time in quite awhile. I onve thought I’d never get tired of the stuff. Now, if I have a soda, it’s almost always a Pepsi-One. I never liked Kool-Aid when I was a kid, but the sugar-free stuff you can buy today is great. I still can’t stand beer of any kind.
So, How have your tastes in beverages changed over the years? any real surprises?
Every now and then, I tire of whatever my current drink of choice is, so I alternate back and forth (and forth?) between Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, and Coke. (Except, of course, when I’m in the mood for something different like a Big Red or root beer. :))
Well, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes three years ago, so that has really changed my beverage habits. I used to love Gatorade, but that’s right out. Same goes for gin and tonic… or most any other mixed drink. Far too much sugar, and diet soda just doesn’t mix well.
Now I drink diet colas, diet 7-up, and diet Barq’s root beer is quite good. The clear, sugar-free flavored fizzy water that comes in the 1-liter bottles at the grocery - those are good. And I also like Crystal Light Iced Tea mix.
One beverage I didn’t abandon was beer. Still love beer. And lately, I’ve developed a taste for Single Malt Scotch. Not a good thing for a diabetic, I know, but it’s OK in moderation as long as I keep my blood sugar in check.
I lived on Diet Dr. Pepper when I was in my early 20’s. Now you couldn’t pay me enough money to drink diet anything. I trained myself to be a water drinker around 89 and I’m still a water drinker. At least a few litres per day, preferably Evian. Well, actually I prefer SwissAlp water, but can I find it? nooooooooo…
After that:
** Milk ** after sweet foods.
** Coke with Lemon ** as a kind of dessert drink.
** Tom Collins ** when I want a buzz.
** Brewed Paradise Iced Tea ** , no sugar or lemon.
** Freshly squeezed orange juice ** , any time, any place.
** Pineapple juice ** sometimes.
I am not a fan of carbonated beverages at all. Thank god for the recent explosion of juice and iced tea alternatives. Just about any green tea iced tea (with or without honey, echinacea, ginseng, etc, etc…) will hit the spot any time of day.
Drink lots of soda water. I like the carbonation without any taste. If I want taste, I’ll drink beer. Either way, I think I really like carbonated non-sweet drinks.
