Proposed local regulations on pet ownership.
It’s that sixth rabbit that sends the noise level out of control.
We have a three pet rule in the city I live in. I’ve had more than three pets and nothing has happened. They know I have more than three because I buy licenses for them all (three dogs, one cat). I think it is a way to force people who are causing problems with having more pets than they can take care of to give some up.
Kind of pisses me off that we have laws on the books that are only enforced if someone complains. But, that’s how people are.
My question is, how big are the fines for not mowing your lawn, keeping trees/shrubs trimmed back from the street, or taking out your trash in that town? Are they as prohibitive about other “hazards” too?
Thank God someone has identified the root of the problem. Too many pets! It could lead our youth into Sin!
If you don’t like it, move to some country with constitutionally-guaranteed freedoms. We don’t need your kind here.
Sailboat
It appears that Sailboat is not aware that Paul in Saudi is an American citizen, in fact IIRC, he is in the armed forces. (Am I correct in that recollection?) Perhaps he should be much more careful before flinging such bigotry about?
I don’t really see anything unreasonable about a cap on the number of pets one can own within a municipality.
Marc
Nor do I, but the fines are certainly prohibitively high. One hundred dollars a day? What about those people who want to ensure beloved pets do not get euthanized, and who want to find them a loving home? This could take a while, and while they search they are being fined each day for non-compliance? There must be a more reasonable middle ground than that.
I read it as Sailboat responding to the OP in an ironic fashion, you know "try moving to a country qith constitutional freedoms… oh you already live there "…
I suppose I am too dense to take offense. I am sure none was intended.
For the record, I am a retired Army Man.
And you moved to a place with more constitutional freedoms, right? Like Saudi Arabia.
Whaaaa? I am so confused!
Resets the irony meter…fiddles…is this thing on? tap, tap
Yes, I meant to comment ironically on how we always hear how free we are but people try this kind of thing.
If your pets cause problems, you should be accountable. If they don’t, it’s nobody’s damn business.
Sailboat
Cmon guys, I think Sailboat meant to accentuate the erosion of freedoms that is overwhelming the USA right now. You know, pretty much stating the obvious: we’ve lost it. The constitution has been used to wipe some overzealous republican ass. 'Boat, am I right?
Ok, I bow out then. Sorry Sailboat.
Out of curiosity when there’s a five animal limit does it only apply to certain animals.
I’m thinking about for example budgies or mice?
That law is on the books here. I think it’s pure bullshit. When they start telling people how many kids they can have, then they can tell me how many cats I can have. I don’t have kids, but I still pay school taxes and don’t bitch about it. My cats never go outside, and do contribute to the local economy (food, litter, and vet visits.). Mine are all vaccinated and registered, and I think the only time the law is enforced is when there is a “collector” situation and the animals aren’t being cared for.
Is it per household? So if I have 2 dogs and a rabbit, and my girlfriend has 3 cats, we can’t move in together and keep all the animals? That doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
Both my parents and my in-laws live in cities where no more than two animals are allowed in one household. Two cats, two dogs or a cat and a dog. My in-laws rescue racing greyhounds, and usually have five dogs at any one time, blatantly breaking the rules, but have only been talked to about it once. They are friendly with their neighbors, and so haven’t been turned in.
They have a ready made argument though. Greyhounds aren’t classified as dogs in Kansas. They’re livestock.
