For 20+ years (after our 1st kid was born) my wife was always on the left side closest to the bedroom door to get up to take care of the baby(s). Yeah, sexist I know. 2 moves and it happen to stay the same.
Rearranged our bedroom last year and due to the position of the outlet to plug in my alarm clock we had to switch sides. Took several months before it felt normal as I am a side sleeper. At times I will still get up and turn into my nightstand out of habit of turning a certain way when getting out of bed.
Until I got married, I basically slept in the middle - my parents have pictures of me when I was a toddler - sleeping on my back, no pillow, with my arms above my head.
If the temperature is suitable, I still sleep this way, and my husband is on my right.
When we first got married, we had a bed with a shelf at Thea headboard, so we would have our glasses and alarm clock there, so it didn’t matter which side of the bed we slept on, as I could reach the alarm clock from either side.
We switch sides in certain situations, such as when we would sleep in his hold rom in the basement of his parents‘ house. I insisted on having the side away from the corner. As my eyesight is far worse than his, I need to be able to reach my glasses, and supplemental lighting when I get up, so I need a nightstand. At home I can find things in the dark, but I‘m the one in charge of the alarm clock, so I still need a nightstand at home.
When we were first married, I slept to my husband’s left, because he moved into my place, and that was my preferred side of the bed. But somewhere early on, we swapped sides, and that’s how it’s been as long as I can remember, except for those first few months.
When we were sleeping over at each other’s apartments I slept on the left with Ms. P on the right. In our first apartment in Brooklyn we switched. When we moved to the DC area, we switched again. We bought a house down the street in 1999, and when we’re home I’m always on the right. When we’re on vacation it varies. She’s usually on the side nearest the nightstand.
It has not. I think any decision to change bed side would be associated with changes in bedroom arrangement. Either a move to a new house or room, or moving the furniture around like she likes to do every once in a while.
I always slept on the nearer (right) side, the side with better light for reading. But last November I got a serious injury in my leg and had to change the dressing every day for three months. So I had to sit on that side, with all my medical supplies, making it necessary to sleep on the far side, with husband and cats in between. Good thing we have a king size bed.
Always on the left side at home (I can’t imagine people switching from one side to the other). King bed. It’s closer to the bath room and also closer to let the dogs in and out when they get up at 3:30am. But my Wife will let them out too.
I get up at night more than my Wife, but she has very easy access to the bathroom too.
At hotels, I’m always closer to the door to the room. It gives my Wife more room to unpack and layout stuff on chairs and such. She always unpacks. I don’t unless it’s a stay for more than 3 nights. So depending on the layout, it changes.
Never had a discussion about this. It’s just what we do.
I’m consistent- I always sleep on the side my husband didn’t choose. His choice might be based on the availability of a nightstand/outlet in a hotel room - but aside from that , I have no idea what he bases his choice on. There are only two bed placement possibilities in our bedroom at home - and the side he prefers in arrangement A is different from the side he prefers in the other arrangement.
Always on the side closest to the bathroom and/or the side with the easiest access to get out. I usually sleep lightly and often get up for the bathroom or else to get water. Hotels, usually the same. Was a bit annoying that the hotel I was in london had the outlet and charging area on the side of the bed closest to the bathroom and there was a big column right in the middle of the room that I had to go around. It was one of those converted office buildings so the rooms were a bit unique.
^This…although my wife always picks the side that is closest to the bathroom…and I get the other side, regardless of where we are: hotel, vacation, visiting family, etc. So whether it’s the left side or the right side of the bed is randomly determined based upon where the closest bathroom is.
