Generally when I hear guys talk about going to places like Thailand, Brazil, Poland even Montreal, I have a pretty good idea why there are going. Unless, it’s just my friends who are into that stuff.

I read the book “Brothel, The Mustang Ranch and its Women”, which is a non-fiction account of legal prostitution in Nevada.
The rules for working as a prostitute are so restrictive that the women are virtually prisoners at the whorehouse and they are charged for things like all the food they consume, even though they can’t go elsewhere.
What suprised me most is that virtually all of these women still have “pimps”…sometimes it is a simply a lazy-assed manipulative husband or boyfriend, but they all seemed to have been coerced to some extent by some man to take the job

Yes, there is quite a bit of overlap. There are male “gay” prostitutes who go with other men for the money but say they are straight and terrified of their girlfriends finding out. Some of the male prostitutes servicing the women like I mentioned in my previous post have boyfriends.
A couple of times, when I was in Amsterdam a few years back. I don’t regret doing it, but it wasn’t all that great, even though the girls were beautiful and at least acted enthusiastic. I’ve generally found one night stands to be similarly underwhelming, so I think it’s mostly that sex with someone I don’t have any sort of romantic attachment or interest in doesn’t really do it for me.

Condom use is pretty much universal. The Public Health Ministry has periodically launched huge condom campaigns. Every bar owner I know emphasizes to the girls that they must insist on condoms.
I haven’t, but I have considered it. I have nothing ethical against prostitution so long as
1- the prostitute is doing so of their own free will
2- it’s an escort service type thing rather than the street hustlers
3- they insist on protection
4- those involved use common sense (no “meet me in this dark alley where people can hide in shadows and bring lots of cash and we’ll go to a hotel from there” or “yeah, come to my hotel room by way of the dark alley in the corner 3 blocks away” type stuff)
Of course the only way you could assure the above is to legalize and monitor it and that will never happen*. Still, I think it’s pretty much safe if you pursue it intelligently.
The reason I would use an escort service (though I haven’t) is that currently I’m not partnered nor am I seeking a partner- my life is a bit in flux and I don’t know where I’ll be a year from now and so I want to travel alone for a while. However, to quote a showtune, “I’m only 41 I still have my virility/and I can romp through Cupid’s grove with great agility/but life is more than sexual combustability!” I don’t want a relationship or a commitment of any kind, and I find (this is just me, YMMV) the notion of casual bar-based hook-up sex repulsive. (Among other things there’s the whole “Life is like a box of sexual chocolates- you never know what you’re gonna get” factor- is this person going to try to steal my kidneys and eat my dog or, worse, decide I’m his soul-mate and call me from then on to tell me about the cheetah Beanie Baby he just won on e-Bay and his cat Mr. Gigglywiggly.)
But at least in theory, an escort service would give you a sexual outlet with an attractive stranger and there’s no commitment, you each get what you want and walk away from it without having to worry about seeing each other again and singing the up-tempo and more joyful Dreamgirls song “One night only/one night only/that’s all I’ve got to spare/One night only/let’s not pretend to care…”. And it might cost a bit but, as the cliche goes, “ain’t none of it for free really”, and it’s worth the lack of future involvement.
But I could be wrong.
PS- I suppose it may seem contradictory that I’m anti-casual sex (just for myself- I couldn’t care less what other people do [unless they’re my friends, when I just hope they’ll be careful]) but pro prostitution. But, never claimed to be consistent.
*Though it did in the Civil War- the U.S. Army under General Don Carlos Buell legalized and licensed and monitored it because STDs were out of control. By most accounts it was one of the most efficient government regulated private industries in U.S. history.

I’ve only a tiny bit of knowledge of the Angeles City (Philippines) scene, from ex-bar girls who consider themselves very lucky to have gotten out. Lots of girls get pregnant although the two to whom I’ve talked never went bareback (yeah, right).
I’ll be visiting the Philippines for the first time soon (as soon as my daughter goes to university). However, I really doubt anything will happen, as my Filipina wife will be with me. I doubt I’ll end up within a hour’s drive of any of the red light districts. Still, I understand your comment.
