I have no dog in this fight, as I’ve never used a prostitute and can’t imagine myself ever doing so (romance and real feelings are what turn me on), but you might want to check out some of the “Letters From Working Girls” on the blog linked earlier in this thread, as several of them clearly contradict this assertion.

Never been with a prostitute, but I did know a couple of women who became prostitutes, way back in the day - girls I went to HS with.
My impression was that, having dropped out of school and doing mucho drinking & drugging, it was the only way to make relatively big bucks fast - it was either that, or some really low-paying service job, which generally did not pay enough to support a lot of partying (nor could you be all that drunk & stoned and say work as a checkout clerk).
Dunno about the pimp situation, or how much these women were exploited, as by the time they went into that I had more or less lost any contact. My impression was that it was a voluntary choice of lifestyle for those with limited “legitimate” options - on the one hand money and “partying”; on the other, relative sobriety and ill-paid & tedious work. The thing is, the long-term prospects for prostiution are terrible.

I see your Mister Gigglywiggly and raise you the guy who smoked crack in my apartment and the guy with the shrine to Tammy Wynette.

I’ll see your Tammy Wynette and raise you the guy who carried drugs in my car (nearly getting me arrested) and had an Olivia Newton John obsession. Forget just a shrine, nearly his entire apartment was covered with ONJ stuff.
Sounds like if Otto’s guy ever meet’s Antinor’s guy and they see Sordid Lives they’ll never leave their apartment. (For those who haven’t seen it, one character is a transgendered gay man who’s obsessed with Tammy and Olivia Newton John plays a major supporting role [a somewhat butch lounge singer in a small town Texas honkytonk, and she does a great job]).
A valient effort my friend, but trust a sister when she tells you, in a Battle of the Freakshow Tricks, you are simply not going to win.

Fine fine, you win. You have the freakier taste in tricks. I don’t think that’s a contest I want to win anyway. ![]()

It’s not that my tastes are freakier. It isn’t like I knew the guy was a crack-smoker (who by the way left his goddamn makeshift pipe in my apartment, try disposing of one of those sometime) and the other one wasn’t toting his Tammy doll around with him (and disrupt his precious shrine? Nevah!). And I won’t even start about the guy who, when we were done, asked if I’d mind him calling over some friends to use me as a “cum dump” (why yes, I would mind that, quite a bit actually). I seem to attract the one with problems which only become apparent after the fact.
Otto darlin, I was just teasing.

Not as good as the other, unfortunately.

Miller has gone from straight to bi to gay in the time that he’s been posting on the SDMB. This place has a swishifying effect, it would seem. ![]()

I’m back to bisexual now. I have a scorecard available, if you need it.
(Actually, I’ve always been bi, but I used to consider that to be a subset of “gay,” so I used the terms interchangably. I’ve been having some doubts about my terminology lately, though.)

I’ll be visiting the Philippines for the first time soon (as soon as my daughter goes to university). However, I really doubt anything will happen, as my Filipina wife will be with me. I doubt I’ll end up within a hour’s drive of any of the red light districts. Still, I understand your comment.

Sorry. Should have specified “single guys or guys without their wives”. Obviously my friend who went to Thailand with his wife for their honeymoon probably didn’t see a prostitute.
At another friends bachelor party, one of the guys (known for his ‘vacations’) was talking about us all going to South America. Of course we’re all like “Fuck yeah!!” since we’re drunk and just came out of a strip club. Of course later at the weding, the groom was like “uh…you know there’s no way we’re going with him on that trip, right?”. I’m like “yeah, that was mostly a lot of big talk.”
I’ve been to the legal brothels in Pahrump, NV numerous times. Obviously I liked it, or I wouldn’t have gone back. I went more often when one particular girl was working, but she is gone now - so I haven’t gone recently.
I’ve talked with a few of the girls numerous times and I’d be willing to take a stab at answering questions about legal prostitution (as far as I know) in Nevada. Whenever the subject of prostitution comes up on the SDMB, there seems to be a lot of misinformation (or people’s opinions are colored by the illegal type of prostitution).

Some things I’ve wondered:
1- (You might not know this one for obvious reasons, but I’ll ask anyway) Are there gay brothels out there or just hetero?
2- Do the places take credit cards and, if so, does it say ‘Mustang Ranch Brothel and Casino’ on it or does it have a more generic ‘Peterman Services, Inc.’ type thing?
3- Any idea what the split is between the girls and the business (i.e. what % does she keep and what goes to the house)? I’ve wondered if it’s like chair rental in a barber shop.
4- Is there like a menu of “this much for a hand job/that much for intercourse/etc.” or do you negotiate a price? What about a list of “things we do not do”?

Yep, there’s lots of stuff on the internet that supports male fantasies. Look, guys, I don’t want to come off as some pussy-whipped feminazi sympathizer, but as a journalist, scholar, and male, I’ve spent a lot of time studying the female mind. It’s not all that complicated. They know what men want. And if that’s all they have to trade for what they, in turn, want for themselves, well, they’ll hike a skirt long enough to get it. In my 57 years on this planet, I’ve never heard any parent ever say, “Gee, it’d be great if my daughter could become one of those really expensive hookers!”
Ask as many women as you know this question: “If you could earn $100,000 a year as a bank executive or $200,000 as a prostitute, which would you do?” Let me know what you find out.
That’s not a fair comparision. I hardly think that most women who are prostitutes had a second option of bank executive. It’s more likely the choice was “minimum wage job/unemployed or prostitute.”
Note that this has nothing whatsoever to do with any feelings I may have towards prostitution, but if you’re going to take up an argument against it you should at least be accurate.

Brings to mind another question: is there a security person present? Or do you have to do a metal detector or anything?
Also, while I’m sure that condoms are absolutely mandatory, do you have to bring any kind of medical records with you or do they at least ask you about your sexual history/any STDs etc.?
And one other question if you don’t mind: if you wanted to take your wife with you for a three-way, would they let you (for the right price, of course)?

I’ve never been to a prostitute, but I’ve watched a lot of HBO.
Have you seen Cathouse, their “documentary series” about the Bunny Ranch? If so, is it a good representation of Nevada brothels?
*Cathouse *is hilarious, but their more serious documentaries about street prostitutes are heartbreaking.

There’s a security guard that wanders around, but he isn’t very intimidating. I think the police would get there pretty quick if there was any problems. Pahrump’s a pretty small town. When I first started going there, they had really cheap beer at the bar, and a lot of townies (who had no intention of partying with the girls) would hang out and I think they had some problems. They’ve raised the bar prices now, and there are a lot fewer “non-customers” there.
No metal detectors or anything. I brought a knapsack once (V-Day present for the girl I knew), and they asked to search it.
Condoms- absolutely. No medical records, but they do a “dick check” (looking for visible signs of any STDs, I guess) before you start. They don’t ask for any history, I guess they feel condoms are protection enough. I once read a stat (sorry, no cite) that in the history of legal prostitution in Nevada, they has never been a case of a girl or a customer contracting an STD from each other.
Re wife - absolutely. The girls advertise on the web site whether they party with couples and or women. You can even research ahead of time who you’d like to party with.
Never seen Cathouse, but I did catch an epsisode of Love for Sale (Sundance). It is about the Chicken Ranch, which is next door to Sherri’s. Seem to focus more on the relationship between the girls, which didn’t interest me much. Very Soap Operaish. I’ve been to the Bunny Ranch once, it seemed similar, but not as nice, as Sherri’s.
What about oral sex? That would suck.
No, that tends to be uncovered. It’s vaginal and anal where you’ll find a rare prostitute who won’t insist on condom use.
Prostitutes skeeve me out big-time so no. My kink is beautiful, semi-virginal girls so the concept isn’t really compatible for me. I knew a coworker once who went on a business trip to NYC with a friend/coworker of mine. The coworker freely admitted to my friend that he loved to hire prostitutes to just eat them out and he had just done it twice that night. No thanks, I will have the Big Mac.
Don’t men have masturbatory skills anymore? I get horny often enough but I can be my own best partner and I am extremely cheap. It saves a world of hurt for everyone too.
