I never wear a mask outdoors because outdoors seems pretty safe, and those flimsy cloth things that block something like less than half of the virus wouldn’t keep me from getting coronavirus anyway. Have gotten no reaction from anyone.
Going indoors seems extremely reckless right now. Not having an N95 mask that can actually protect me from coronavirus I haven’t really been in a public building since this started, either before or after the mask order in my state. I basically stopped except for once a week getting groceries. I stopped going to church, or any kind of “recreational shopping” .Too dangerous without an N95 mask but you need food to eat, and didn’t get any reaction not wearing a mask. (Maybe that it was Walmart had something to do with it).
When the mask order came I still didn’t have a real, effective N95 mask so rather than smother under an ineffective piece of ordinary cloth instead of something that can actually block coronavirus, I switched to online grocery pickup. Just as well since it seems a lot safer that way since the only contact is outdoors when they verify your order, so just as well.
There were no uptick from protests in places that were locked down. You can’t make a judgement about places that had already opened up. Also, you a picture with two people up close in Tulsa (a place where there was already an active outbreak). You’d never be able to tell whether or not mask wearing had any effect.
OTOH, wide shots of protests show a large number of people wearing masks. Plus they’re outside.
And putting on your seatbelt and then driving 120 MPH while drunk would be stupid too. But it doesn’t mean that putting on your seatbelt is stupid. It’s the 120 MPH and drunk parts that are stupid.
I’ve got several of the tube/gaiters with a pocket for a filter. Stick the filter in (it’s only N 2.5, but you go with what you can get) and you have 2 cloth layers and, in my case a 5-layer filter (2 non-woven, 2 meltblown cloth, whatever that is, and an activated carbon filter in the middle) between me and the world.
It doesn’t stay up as well as I’d like though. I should probably see if I can find an elastic band to go over the head, maybe.
Here in Canada I have not faced an hostility for wearing a mask. I am not aware of anyone having faced hostility for wearing a mask. From the outset people here have worn masks. There was, however, a lot of hostility directed against the USA when it tried (and for a period did) withhold masks that we had already contracted for.
To reduce infection from abroad we also use a giant prophylactic – we closed the border to the USA. Unfortunately, illegal Americans keep sneaking in, and many of those legally transiting violate the terms.
The utter stupidity of the USA in its celebration of Freedumb titude and its willingness to cause many thousands of people die is reprehensible. Right now the USA is a failed state, with covid-19 just being the tip of the iceberg. When it’s fearless leader was complaining about “shithole countries” he forgot to look in the mirror.
I sincerely hope that the USA can pull up its socks, but as it stands, it can’t even pull up its mask.
Well the Canadian signal has been lit, now the SDMB Canadians are going to flood this discussion talking about how Canada only fights wars in self-defense and how racism doesn’t exist in Canada.
Rallies decrying mandatory mask policies were held in several Canadian cities on Sunday, with protesters calling for “freedom of choice” despite concerns of a resurgence of COVID-19 cases in several provinces.
Protesters gathered in cities including Vancouver, Calgary, Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Ottawa in support of the “March to Unmask” movement, arguing that wearing masks in public spaces should be voluntary and not mandated by the government.
Who the hell is going to indoor restaurants these days? I’m not even going to out door restaurants, and I’m reheating my takeout. I wear a mask to pick up the take out.
My gym is open with limited capacity. Everyone in the gym needs to wear a mask, including while they exercise. They also have to keep their distance.
Even so, i don’t trust it. I’m now exercising in my bedroom, and i see a personal trainer via teleconference.
There are open pools?
Yeah, it sounds like it may be largely theater where you live. I mean, wearing a mask as your walk through the restaurant is better than not wearing it at all, but hardly adequate.
Yep. We’ve been doing alright, going to breweries with outside seating or just tailgating in their lots. Food trucks and good beer, social distancing, masks at the truck or taps.
Winter is going to do away with that. We discussed this over dinner last night (I made liver/onions) and we both agree to go back to take-out.
I’ve been wearing a mask in public since about a month before the UK government mandated it - during that month, there were several occasions when people pointed, laughed and jeered at me in public places. During that same period, my daughter (who is in her early 20s but looks like a little girl) , whilst shopping on her own, was confronted aggressively by a complete stranger (a large male) who told her to take off her mask because it wouldn’t protect her.
Since the mandate, we have experienced no further problems like that.
A lot of people who think “social distancing” in a closed room will protect them, or that the virus isn’t that dangerous to begin with. Basically, people not listening to the doctors, but rather to the politicians pushing things open for the economy.
Yeah, restaurants are hurting. Opening up even partially helps stem the bleeding, along with increased take-out. But make no mistake, even 75% capacity seating is hurting businesses. Still, I don’t accept there is a safe way to eat in a public place. Maybe an outdoor event with plenty of spacing, where everyone actually uses the 6 ft rule. Not indoors.
Depends on location. The theory is the headcount is kept low, so people can socially distance as they exercise. You have to wear a mask to check in, because you get closer to the attendant and talk to them. But on the floor, you are supposed to spread out. Reality says you are in an enclosed space where everyone is breathing heavily, spreading any coronavirus around and circulating the smaller drops. How good is the ventilation? Is it a single direction flow, or circulation? How filtered is the air? Yeah, it seems more covid theater, pushed by the “but the economy” folks.
Essentially the same response.
Yes, some people are massive assholes. I’m sorry your daughter had to deal with that. Physical intimidation, especially from a big adult to a “child”, is reprehensible.
The six feet thing was based on the disproved idea that spread is from large droplets (and fomites). The smaller droplets that seem to be mostly responsible hang in the air much longer, and can travel much more than 6 feet. More distance is better, but a bunch of people six feet apart all panting on treadmills for an extended period is a significant risk. I believe my gym is right to require masks at all times, including while exercising.
And that might even be good enough, but it’s not a risk that’s worth it to me.
I screwed up the other night. The gal who does my hair had to reschedule me a few weeks earlier so I wouldn’t be able to see her for over a month. Well, when I got home she called and said someone had cancelled and if I wanted I could come in. Since I only live 5 minutes, I said sure and went over there.
So she lets me in, takes my temperature and I walk towards the back with her to the sink to wash my hair. A few other customers are glaring at me and giving me dirty looks.
She I’m reclined in the chair and she’s washing my hair, I suddenly realize that I left my mask in the car. And the gal cutting my hair never even noticed in either. Thankfully they had some there and she gave me one.
That explains, I think, all the dirty looks I had gotten when I came in.
I’m in the pro-mask northeast. I’ve only gotten positive comments.
i was a very early adopter of mask wearing, and i wear a mask even when just walking around in my suburban neighborhood, where i can typically stay 20 feet from other people. (I wanted to be an example of mask-wearing being “normal”.) Early on, the masks i had were probably not very effective, but i had some that were really cute, with things like a shark’s mouth on the front. Neighbors were amused and shared that.
I now wear a reusable n90 mask with a soft silicon seal around my face when i need to be close to strangers. The screener at the hospital i had to go to yesterday looked and said, “your mask is 1000 times better than ours, but i have to ask you to wear ours.” I offered to wear their surgical mask over mine, and she said that would be great, and thanked me for my understanding. I’ve had three other healthcare workers say nice things about my mask.
