Okay. Hi guys. I’ve been reading some but not all the threads to find some help… so here goes.
I have a Sony Bravia XBR 9 and I built my own computer that has a GTX 280 for a video card. Running Windows 7 Pro.
Issue: I hooked up a HDMI cable to the TV and on the other end a DVI to HDMI converter to the video card. I’m not getting any audio what so ever out of the TV speakers, while the computer speakers work perfectly. I played around with the options on the TV and it’s not helping much. I also attempted to switch the audio feed on the computer to Digital Audio (HDMI) and the Digital Audio S/PDIF and they both register they are there, but nothing happens.
Am I doing something wrong? Which opitions and no what do I need to do to get audio on my TV with HDMI?
If I understand you correctly, you are plugging a cable into the DVI port of your computer and then converting the signal to HDMI which you are running into your TV.
The answer is simple: There is no audio coming out of your DVI port. HDMI can carry both audio and video. DVI is video-only. You cannot make sound come out of a DVI port.
DVI can carry audio, but on a card as old as the 280, it may be hit/miss: Digital Visual Interface - Wikipedia. ETA - I should mention that I’ve gotten audio over DVI>HDMI adapters on a Radeon HD 4830, so I know it can be done.
If you are using windows 7, right click on the speaker icon in the taskbar and select playback devices. You should be able to select HDMI there and set it as the default. (sorry, can’t be more specific right now because the computer I’m using doesn’t have anything connected to HDMI).
IIRC, the GTX 280 only supports audio-over-HDMI via S/PDIF in (as compared to a digital HDMI device). Look on the card for a little 2-pin connector, like the one here. If the connector exists, you can hook it up to your audio card or motherboard using the right cable.
