Why won’t my HDMI from laptop to HDTV audio work? I have Windows xp on a Compaq8510p. Sound will come out of the computer speakers, but will not feed through the TV speakers. Video works just fine . . .
I have the exact same problem, except with Vista Home Premium on a Gateway laptop.
You might want to go into Control Panel --> Sound and change your default output to SPDIF and reboot. According to all my searching online, HDMI audio (which is sent alongside the video signal) is treated the same as SPDIF by Windows and doing this fixes the problem for about half the people out there.
I’ve spent a number of hours on this issue and haven’t found a fix yet, though I’m sure there is one. I’m only computer savvy enough to get into trouble…
What model TV do you have? Mine has settings for HDMI audio - analog (it has 2 rca connectors for analog audio next to the HDMI connector), digital, and auto-select. If I set it to analog, I won’t get audio over the HDMI. Might want to check the manual or play with some menus on the TV.
The reason was that when my TV came out, HDMI was still pretty new and they were allowing for the possibility that I’d be using a DVI output and a DVI-HDMI converter. Which I was with my old Comcast STB.
Funny you mention this problem, because it just happened tonight with my digital cable and TV. It’s connected through the HDMI cable. My mom says she just tried to change the channel (with the cable box remote,) and the sound stopped. The TV sound is fine, since the DVD player has sound, but nothing I did got the audio back from the cable box until I used the craptacular “red, white, and yellow” RCA cables from the VCR. The audio came through fine on those, but not with the HDMI. I even unplugged the cable box and plugged it back in, no effect.
And yes, I turned up the volume on the cable box itself, made sure to hit the mute button as well, but I still got no audio until I used a different cable.
