One case I’ll mention here because it’s the exception: Dan Futterman (Judging Amy, Birdcage, Will & Grace) is an actor who refused to discuss his private life when he was single. Later it turned out he is…
straight.
However, he has played several gay characters and didn’t want the knowledge that he’s not gay to influence viewers in accepting him. (Maybe Sean Hayes is really straight too… pshaw, and monkeys might fly out of my butt.)
Huh. Never heard the Eddie Murphy story either. I need to get out more!
Well, you’re not the first person to accuse me of just falling off the turnip truck ;), but I’m a bit puzzled on why you would feel angry about someone avoiding the “hardships” of gay life. If he’s afraid, he’s afraid. And rightly so, re: the incident in the park. That, coupled with the problems he’s bound to encounter with his career in two-faced Hollywood, is a lot to be afraid about. I realize lots of guys buck up and do it regardless, but I think the word “coward” is a bit harsh. I dunno.
Plus, why did he even have to say anything to anyone? If he was beat up by a trick, couldn’t he just have gone home and keep it all on the hush?
I’m not saying it’s not possible he was with a trick; I’m just saying he went through an awful lot of trouble and drew more attention to himself needlessly.
I have wondered several times where closeted gay celebrities hook up. Gay bars would seem not an option since the risk of outing/photographs is too high, while the rent-boy you pay a few hundred dollars to can make ten times that selling his story to the tabloids. I wonder if there’s a gay version of Heidi Fleiss or Sidney Biddle Barrows (i.e. discretion assured high price/high quality “sex by the hour” services) for wealthy gay men.
I must admit I suspected that DHP was gay, yet I’m disappointed in a way. Wouldn’t it be great to see that a guy can be single, thin, and neat; and like fine wine and food; be articulate, cultured, and well-mannered-- and NOT be gay. It’s almost a cultural stereotype nowadays. If a guy departs the baggy-jeans-XL sweathirt-needs-to-lose-30-pounds slob look…people think he’s gay. By the standards of judgement employed by average people today, both Niles and Frazier doubtlessly seem very gay. I can’t say for sure but I’m fairly certain time was when a man actually had to droop a wrist or have a lisp before anyone started whispering.
But now I am totally surprised about the guy who plays Marty!
On reflection, it’s said that there’s a higher incidence of being gay in the theatre, and I’m sure a lot of that spills over into movies and TV. After all, where else do actors get their start?
Of course what really confuses folks is people like me and my friend Stef. I am a baggy-jeans-XL-sweatshirt-needs-to-lose-30-pounds slob looking guy, Stef is really cute, has multiple piercings in his ears/navel/etc., and until recently was a hairdresser but he’s straight.

Jillian and her partner, Alice Dodd (who guested on Judging Amy a number of times) were married in San Francisco when that was happening. Being non-A list celebs, their union wasn’t heralded with the fanfare of a certain celeb couples’. Ah well.
As for Spacey, he’s had the spectre of alleged dishonesty hanging over his head for more than a decade. The man won the highest recognition in the U.S. for his work in a film, and people were more interested in writing about the woman he came to the award ceremony with, the one for whom he declared his love in his acceptance speech. (“Who is this Diane? Does he love her or does he love her? Why was she surprised when he said that in his speech?” blah blah blah) Despite all of his protestations that he’s not interested in discussing his private life, that he wishes to be as transparent as possible so that his characters shine though rather than being imprinted over him, the matter of the mans’ sexuality is never put to rest.
No matter what he does at this point, there are going to be people who believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is a lying, closeted gay man. He could get married and have a passel of children, and he’d still be a lying, closeted gay man, perpetuating the idea that there is shame in being out and proud by his “refusals to be honest.” He could devote himself to celibacy and become a Catholic priest and he’d still be a lying, closeted gay man, reaping the benefits of being gay while facing none of the stigma.
At this point, I think a lot of people need to ask themselves why it’s so important to them that Kevin Spacey is gay, especially if they aren’t personally availed of first-hand knowledge to that effect.
I believe Spacey only withdrew the assault complaint, not the theft complaint.
Also, as someone said, if he was in that park for any other purpose than actually walking his dog (yes, dogs do decide they have to go potty at odd hours) and got smacked up by a “trick” why even file a complaint? I’m sure a new cell-phone would be no big deal for him; just go home and not stir up any questions as to what he was doing there at that hour.
Even the Gay Guy can be surprised by people coming out:
[ul][li]Tom Hulce[/li][li]Richard Chamberlain[/li][li]Amanda Bearce[/li][li]Portia di Rossi[/li][li]Raymond Burr[/li][li]Johnny Mathis (my mother’s favorite singer to boot)[/li][li]Rosie O’Donnell[/li][li]Paula Poundstone[/li][li]Cesar Romero[/li][li]Bryan Singer[/li][li]Chris Sanders (“Lilo & Stitch”)[/ul][/li]I’m fairly certain all of these have been confirmed, but I could be wrong.
I’m more often surprised by the people I’m sure are gay and turn out not to be. And if David Hyde Pierce is gay, that would surprise me only because I’d been under the impression he was just simply straight (not that there’s anything wrong with that), not that I couldn’t believe he was gay.
On the one hand, I’m in substantial agreement with TeaElle on this entire topic. Why is this so important to, really, anyone? Even celebrities deserve their privacy.
On the other hand, I’d pay serious money to see Alice Dodd in a woman-in-prison movie. meeeow!
