HE is gay? Who the hell woulda thunk it...

What the heck - as long as the thread’s been revived: what’s the story on Christina Applegate? I read that she once went through a wedding ceremony with another woman. But she later said she wasn’t serious when she did it. And she’s now married to a man. So is she straight, gay, bisexual, or what?

Well, I have a very good friend I went to uni with who is into the gay scene in LA…and most of it is word of mouth. Say Mick Jagger is headed to LA, and he asks his bud David Bowie for a number to hook up with a guy [names pulled out of my ass for the sake of discussion] and so David gives him Marc’s number. Marc is very discreet. He wont even tell me who he has done, other than by telling me that he hasn’t done someone but he cant say if some other guy in LA has done him or not… sigh

I would assume that if more than one guy, or combination of men and women of whatever sexual tastes are needed, Marc can come up with enough people to make up a good party…

An interesting interview with Freddie Mercury’s former (female) lover, to whom he left the bulk of his estate.

I never really thought he was gay, but I got the distinct impression he doesn’t care all that much where he gets his snuggling, as long as he gets it.

So, hang on…there’s more actual gay actors in *Frasier * than in Will and Grace? Am I reading this right?

I was surprised to learn that the guy who plays Will is straight. There’s something about how he plays the role - he really convinced me.

Apparently, it’s no secret (amongst players) that Adam Oates is gay. I’ve also been told there are “many more” active NHL players who are gay.

Seems that way. Eric “Will” McCormack and Debra “Grace” Messing are straight as are supporting/recurring players Harry Connick, Shelley Morrison, John Cleese, etc… This leaves only Sean “Jack” Hayes (who has a “don’t ask/don’t tell” [from the Latin for “I’m gay”] policy on his private life, and Megan Mulally, who has admitted that she has had affairs with both women and men.

Frasier has David Hyde Pierce and John Mahoney, neither of whom are technically “out” but neither of whom deny the rumors and both of whom have been sighted in public with their boyfriends (Pierce attended his friend Maureen Reagan’s funeral with his boyfriend and even held his hand on camera- it was very sweet really). I think they’re in the “I’m too damned rich to care about career damage but I don’t want to be known as ‘gay celebrity’ either”. Dan Butler of course is so out he’s in the stratosphere, Edward Hibbert (Gil the food critic, whose marriage to a butch she-mechanic was a running gag on the show) is openly gay, and while I’m not sure about Tom McGowan (Frasier’s boss Kenny, the plump unhappily married guy) he’s very active in AIDS and anti-gay defamation organizations (though this could just be because as a stage actor he has many gay friends, such as this one).
Queer as Folk only has three openly gay actors Robert Gant, Randy “I have no talent but don’t mind taking my clothes off” Harrison, and Peter Paige. Ironically, in interviews Paige, who plays priss-miss Emmett on the show, is very masculine in mannerism, while Harrison seems a flaming queen when not in character. Gant, though a lawyer in real life, seems well spoken but stupid in interviews (and is boyfriends with Dr. Quinn and St. Elsewhere star Chad Allen. (Allen I think exemplifies why there are so many closeted actors; he was a fairly prominent TV actor when a spurned boyfriend sold pics to a tabloid of them smooching in a hot-tub, and since then he’s done gay theater, gay independent film, gay fundraisers, etc…).

Fran Drescher is very good friends with Daniel Davis, who played her butler Niles on The Nanny. She said that the show used to get fan mail urging Daniel, who was born in Arkansas and is openly gay (recently starred in the gay musical La Cage Aux Folles on Broadway, though he has since been replaced by Robert Goulet [very straight]), to teach Charles Shaughnessy (Drescher’s boss/husband on the show) how to speak with a non-fake sounding British accent, and that the Shaughnessy was way too gay to be believed as a romantic lead [he’s straight, married, kids, etc.] while Davis’s chemistry with “Ms. Babcock” was considered one of the most passive-agressively romantic on TV. Cool.

What about John Lennon? Not gay, obviously, but perhaps bi. It’s just an impression I got from things I’ve read about him. A closeness to manager Brian Epstein, then during his split with Yoko, I have an impression that he was able to experiment more with that side of himself.

Anyone have anything more solid than impressions?

When John and Yoko separated temporarily in 1973 (at Yoko’s suggestion!), he ran off to California with Yoko’s secretary May Pang, who later wrote a book about the affair.

Someone mentioned Natalie Merchant earlier, as a passing comment in relation to Michael Stipe. She’s been linked to Stipe in some manner, although that may have been long in the past. I don’t recall her being publically linked to anyone else, and I do know she had a daughter recently. To my knowledge, the identity of the father hasn’t been disclosed.

So. Stipe the daddy, or maybe just a donor? Or no chance?

So long as we’re revisiting this thread, we can add supermodel Saffron Burrows and Fiona Shaw (Aunt Petunia in Harry Potter , who are now . . . uhh . . . roommates.

A very safe bet. I’m distantly related to Bryan, and he was out when we were both teenagers in New Orleans.

He may or may not have had a one night fling with Brian Epstein while in Spain- he changed his story each time he told it. I think it was more gratitude, drugs and friendship than anything else if it happened as every other conquest in his life seems to have been female. (Epstein, at least according to John, was in love with Lennon from the moment he met him and hounded him about a one-timer [Epstein being from the “we’re all basically bisexual, don’t you know” generation].)

There is also a rumor John and Stu Sutcliffe were in love, but Lennon was an extraordinarily jealous, insecure and possessive person who was more likely just friends with him but didn’t want him to have any other friends. (This is the same guy who shagged fans by the hundreds while married to his first wife, shacked up with Yoko in the house he shared with Cynthia and Julian [and was caught red handed when Cynthia returned early from vacation], and yet who went into a manic screaming fit about what a whore Cynthia was because she began dating a guy before they were officially divorced; he actually sued her for divorce on the basis of adultery and used it to give her one of the most unfair divorce settlements any celebrity cast-off ever received*. I’ve rarely if ever read anything about the guy that made me remotely feel I’d like or respect him other than as an artist.

*When Lennon died Julian received the income from half of a trust fund worth about $1 million, the other half going to Sean and the rest of the $100 million+ estate going to Yoko (it’s now closer to $1 billion). Cynthia received £100,000 as a settlement in 1968 which was completely gone in a few years due to marital debts, taxes, bad investments and medical bills [she was broke by the time of Lennon’s death] and £2,400 per year in child support. After years of talking about how proud he was of his father and what a great person Yoko was, Julian finally totally reversed course and hasn’t said a kind word about either in years; he filed a major lawsuit a few years ago and received something around $25 million of the dragon’s treasure.

Ah thanks, Sampiro. I recalled the Stu Sutcliffe thing last night, but wasn’t sure if I read it, or if it was something in Backbeat. Then also I thought there was something about Elton John as well. Perhaps they just did a performance together or something, but there seemed to me to be sign in his life that he dabbled in that direction occasionally. Also the Brian Epstein crush, which I knew about but forgot about it.

So I guess that pretty much puts Lennon in a maybe category. Not for being gay, but possibly bi.

Yeah, I was aware that he wasn’t a kind person but I’m glad to hear that Julien got a good settlement.

Elton John wants people to think that he had a personal connection with everyone he ever met. He did record with Lennon once, but that was all.

OMG, coming from another “needs-to-lose 30 lbs” Tapdanicing Hyena gay man here,I want to tell you this is by far the FUNNIEST thing I have read in a long time…and I am totally gonna use the line “gayer then a tapdancing hyena” in conversation soon…It is too good to pass up!!!

There’s a gay zombie joke in here somewhere.
