Rob Lowe (or do you say, “Raw Blow”) is straight. Unless Melissa Gilbert was just a smoke screen.
I think Jodi is one of those, “It’s understood by everyone, and it’s nobody’s business, so just don’t ask” things. Jodi rocks.
 I believe I will take execption to that remark. Believe it or not, being pale and impeccably groomed and having refined tasted and being alergic to a lot of things are not the hallmarks of being gay…being romantically attracted to men instead of women is…and given that the character has spent a large part of the show being romantically interested in a woman…no closet case there…
I’m not bringing up this point just because every time I see the show, Niles reminds me of my pale, well groomed, highly refined, terrible allergic very very very heterosexual boyfriend…but it helps
To the OP…Bob Mould I guess. And Michael Stipes. But mostly becvause I hadn’t thought much about their sexuality to begin with. Except that I wanted to run my fingers through Stipe’s beautiful curly hair…but then that dream had died already just
Q.E.D.??
Who the hell woulda thunk it…
Is that for real?
Or, …Cite!
Mel Gibson sets my Gaydar off. Always has.
I’ve wondered if the major guilt trip that lead him to fundamentalism is based on that. It’s one thing to feel guilt for things you’ve done, it’s quite another to feel guilt for being who you are.
Just speculation, but it makes sense to me.
They were. That is, they were a couple, but at least one of them had had sex with men on occasion. At any rate, RL was a participant in the events in that hotel room, not merely a voyeur.
[hijack]What really hurt RL’s reputation about that incident was that most people assumed that he’d taken the women (one was underage) against their will. Wrong. It was their camera, for crissakes, and they were the ones who circulated that video all over greater Atlanta. Nobody forced them into anything. Granted, it wasn’t the finest moment of RL’s life, and he did commit statutory rape (was he ever charged? I forget), but only that. I think it might even have been the women’s idea to go to the hotel room in the first place. They were definitely not traumatized by the incident. Until the press picked up on it, of course.[/hijack]
Alan Cummings describes himself as *“sexual.”*Apparently he likes all types of sex. I think he is one of the most talented actors around.
David Hyde Pierce has lived with the same guy for at least a decade. And he’s very talented.
Oh my god…you mean I’m gay and no one told me??? I’d better improve my wardrobe.
Sorry go, wishful thinking. I lost a lot of respect for him too, when it was confirmed for me: I’d always assumed the same as you, and confirmation that he was more of a hypocrit than I’d ever have imagined was pretty disappointing. But I’d still do him, if he didn’t talk until after he left.
No, Niles is not supposed to be gay.
David Hyde Pierce was in a short-lived series in the early 90s (or was it late 80s) called The Powers that Be. He was adorable. He played some henpecked husband (and a State Representative, I think), married to the spoiled daughter of John Forsythe, who I think played the President or something? (I’m too lazy to look it up on IMDb.) Anyway, Pierce’s character was always depressed, always on the verge of suicide, just utterly miserable. The only bright thing in his life was his “longing from afar” love affair (except they didn’t really do anything) with the maid, played by Elizabeth Berridge (sp?). They were absolutely adorable. My favorite characters in the show. I never guessed that Pierce was gay in that show, but my gaydar tripped off when he played Niles. Go figure.
Years ago I read some article (in LA magazine, I think) which interviewed the writers of Frasier. They were gay (well the ones interviewed were). They talked about how gay friendly the show was (and how people often mistook Niles and Frasier for gay) but they did not indicate at all that these characters were closet cases.
I never said Niles was gay. Just that he exhibits a lot of the laundry list of stereotypically gay mannerisms.
And I don’t think anybody can argue that.
Kids, shmids. Lots of homosexuals have 'em. Lots of hets do too, now that I think of it. The real clues (haircut, choice of shoes, conspicuous piercings and/or tatoos) are distinctly lacking in Ms. Fosters case. C’mon Jodi, you can’t resist mah sweet luuuuv.
Anyway, remember that rumor dating back to, man, the '70s I think, that Rod Stewart started off before shows by drinking a bucket of jizz? And then there’s Richard Gere and the whole hamster thing. And Tom Cruise having to put out a full page add in the NYT to say “Nicole and I are not gay”.
Meanwhile, Richard Chamberlain is chuckling his ass off.
I was surprised to find out that Rob Halford from Judas Priest is gay. But I suppose that, as a 12 year old in the 80s, I wouldn’t have figured that out. It had to have been really obvious for me to figure it out, like Boy George. I was very naive.
And count me as one of the surprised at Ian Mackellan. He made some reference to it during his SNL monologue and my husband and I just looked at each other in shock. I thought he had outed himself, but I had no idea he was already “out”.
Bob Mould? Really?? I hadn’t heard that one.
My wife loves “Frasier”. One night we’re in NY visiting a friend (who happened to be gay…sadly he passed away recently :(), “Frasier” happened to be on, and he and I both were like “Niles is so fucking gay.” My wife was like “Nooooooo! He loves Daphne! Stop it! He loves her, he does!” “He’s a big fucking queer!” “Shut UP! He and Daphne are going to marry and have ten beautiful children!” “Well, can’t you tell Daphne’s a closet bull-dyke?” “Ahhhhh! Get out, I’m watching the show alone!”
Well, when she read about two weeks ago that DHP really is gay, man, she was devastated. I’m like, “honey, the actors may be gay, but the characters can be straight!” But she was inconsolable.
My wife and were talking about rumours about Queen Latifah. Anyone know for sure one way or the other?
He’s gay?! [Seinfeld] Not that there’s anything wrong with that [/Seinfeld]
I saw Gods & Monsters too - I just put it down to his being such a fine actor.
Not that it proves anything one way or the other, but before Melissa he dated my cousin (female).
Knew about Michael Stipe because friends-of-friends knew him from the Athens, Georgia, gay bar where he hung out.
The first time I ever heard of Ian McKellan, it was in the queer press, so that was no surprise either.
Ellen and Rosie were quite out in the queer press before they came out in the straight press. In fact, both of them appeared on the cover of queer magazines, as caricatures, before they came out, urging them to take the plunge (Ellen was in a bathing suit, testing water; Rosie was dressed as a bulldyke stereotype on another magazine, a full-leather motrocycle outfit).
There are some artists who I’m never sure if it’s okay to talk about (unless you’re Michelangelo Signorile, it’s considered very wrong to force a non-homophobic celebrity out of the closet in a public medium like, say, a message board), because I’m not sure if they’ve come out officially. I guess it’s probably okay to talk about Madonna, since there probably isn’t a person left who doesn’t know she’s bisexual, though I don’t know of a single interview where she actually says this. I think some of these people get outed just because we in the queer community didn’t know they were “in” to begin with.
The only ones who ever surprise me (and yes, I’m sad to say, I’m perpetrator of stereotypes) are musicians outside the pop industry. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that two of my favourite musicians had come out (Ashley MacIsaac as gay, Kurt Cobain as bi).
I’d like to take this opportunity to out Tom Cruise, though: the man is straight. I’ve never met a queer person who thought he was gay, and never heard one of the friend-of-a-friend rumours that tend to accrete around a celebrity before they come out. If the man’s hiding anything, it’s probably something related to Scientology.
I doubt he is, but I sure wish Elijah Wood was gay…
For me the surprise that wasn’t really a surprise was Richard Chamberlain. I too, had a crush on him when I was younger. As I got older and learned more about such things I did get suspicious however, I decided I wouldn’t believe the rumors unless RC actually came out. Which he did, but frankly it doesn’t really ruin anything for me. I still have fond girlhood memories of my crush.
FWIW, I heard that Alan Cumming is openly Bi.
I find it amusing how all the slash fans like to pair up the LOTR actors except for the one who is openly gay.
By the way, Gandalf is not gay, the actor who plays him is. I wish people would stop mixing up the two. An actor’s sexual preference should have nothing to do with a character they play unless the character shares the same preference. An actor’s sexual preference has never interfered with my ability to “buy” them in a role, nor do I assume their character must share their preference.
That being said however, the one I never bought was Anne Heche. Maybe she was just curious and trying it out but I thought she seemed to conveniently become a lesbian at a time when Ellen was all the talk in Hollywood and Anne’s career may not have been taking off as fast as she liked. In her case however I could not suspend disbelief to like any of her performances on screen but not because she was supposely gay, I just didn’t buy her as sincere person and I thought she was just using Ellen.
However, I may have misjudged her as she was probably just insane.
Hmmm, when I lived in Athens (1987-1990), there wasn’t a local gay bar (well, if there was it was very, very under the radar, I had plenty of gay friends but we just hung out at the Georgia Bar and 40 Watt). and everyone knew Stipe was bi and a big 'ho, he slept with everyone. You’d see him out at bars a lot. (it’s cool for REM in Athens because it’s understod that you’re a big loser if you bother them so they can just hang out) I guess he decided to just firmly plant himself on one side o’the fence…
