HE is gay? Who the hell woulda thunk it...

The rumours I got came from the mid-to-late-90’s. Can’t remember the name of the place mentioned.

That was Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford, actually (how do I know this? I think it was on VH1’s “Most Outrageous Celebrity Moments” or something). Unless Tom did the same thing which would be even dumber…

The biggest surprise for me was probably Robert “Mike Brady” Reed. Never saw that one coming. I was also surprised to learn that Nigel Hawthorne (who so perfectly played the devoted father of 15 in Madness of King George was not only gay but openly so).

On Inside the Actor’s Studio Ian McKellen outed another actor when he recalled what a crush they’d had on each other when they were both young RADA students and neither would approach the other because neither realized the other was also gay. The other actor is Derek Jacobi.

Fannie Flagg was from the generation that didn’t discuss private lives. Unfortunately so was her ex love Rita Mae Brown (a not easy to like woman) who mentioned their affair (and Fannie’s with soap actress Susan Flannery) in her autobiography.

Re: Anderson Cooper- I was more surprised to learn he’s Gloria Vanderbilt’s son than that he’s gay.

MacKenzie Astin (brother of Sean and son of Patty Duke & John Astin) seems to be a live-in item with Dominic Monaghan (Merry from LOTR, who previously lived with Elijah Wood).

Danny Kaye. And Laurence Olivier.

And especially, Danny Kaye and Laurence Olivier.

C’mon. It said right in The Brady theme song that he was “busy with three boys of his own”…

D’OH! I think you’re right!

Michael Stipe is bi. He’s had relationships with Toni Collette and Jane Magazine editor Jane Pratt.

I am hoping that Elijah Wood isn’t but that’s just for my own selfish reasons.

Boomshaker’s. Or something to that effect.

Nonsense. If celebrity gossip is outlawed, only outlaws will subscribe to People. I say, speculate to your heart’s content.

In the April 27, 2004, issue of The Advocate, hunky saxophonist Dave Koz comes out in an interview. My word, but that man is fine!

Wait, Dominic Monaghan is gay? I didn’t know that, either.

I knew about Ian McKellen, because the first time I ever heard about him was in an article and they mentioned he was an openly gay actor.

Cary Grant was probably bi, if anything-one of his ex-wives’ (Dian Cannon, I believe) said he was straight. I’m sure they’d know. (Not that being married MEANS anything, necessarily, but there’s only one guy he’s been linked to, and how many women? So he may have swung both ways.)
I was surprised when I heard that Dick Cheney had a gay daughter, if only because of his affiliation with the religious right. Same with Newt Gingrich’s sister. THAT was rich-talk about God having a sense of humor!
On Gay and Famous-what’s the evidence, at least for long dead historical figures? If only because some are like, ‘huh?’ Some are obvious, though. (Ludwig II of Bavaria).

Little Richard? Makes sense.

BARRY MANILOW??? It wouldn’t surprise me, per se, but I’ve never heard any rumors.

Kathy Najimy-didn’t know.

Tyrone Power? Hmmm, one of the guys in my grandfather’s air force devision said he was in the same shower as Power. Hmmmm…

Anymore, I try not to guess who’s gay and who isn’t-just because it’s usually based on stereotypes.

I am more then a little skeptical about these rumours and that website. Some of the evidence is very flimsy and it is somewhat difficult for a celebrity to actively deny being gay given the conotations around doing just that. The historical “evidence” of certain figures in history’s gayness is very questionable and should be treated with a huge grain of salt. A lot of is just agenda driven puffery or wishiful thinking.

I was trying for a while to find some kind of link, but can’t. (I’ll keep trying though.) But I do recall an “Advocate” article from the early 1990s in which Henry Rollins claimed to be bi-sexual. Mind you, this was in that brief period in the days after ACT-UP and Queer Nation in which being gay was considered extremely edgy, daring and countercultural, and being “a little bit gay” became very chic.

Rollins, like Perry Farrell and Billy Corgin, claimed to be bisexual but was very quick to preface it by saying that he had never, EVER had a sexual experience with another guy, or ever really thought of it. (You figure that out.)

Or basd on cavorting in gay clubs. Talk does get around in the gay community, so if Mr. Big Box Office is blowing cabana boys in South Beach, the word will get out.

I’m curious if Billy Campbell is gay. $5 sez he is.

She’d been married to Dan Finnerty for over 8 years, and has a daughter by him. Are the rumors that KN is lesbian or bi?

I have no idea if Najimy is or isn’t, but being married isn’t solid proof of heterosexuality. Charles Laughton was married to Elsa Lanchester, and he was gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide. Tony Perkins was married and gay. Heck, even Oscar Wilde was married with kids while he was involved with Lord Alfred Douglas.

Yes, Stipe is gay, it was no secret in Athens, GA (where I lived for 5 years). I don’t recall a gay bar but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t one, but members of the group were commonly seen in “non-gay” bars, doing what rock stars do best: getting hammered and getting laid. And they weren’t bothered all that much, because yes: you were a total loser if you did so.

[QUOTE]

Is Jane Pratt bi? In the early 90s, I thought I heard that she was gay, but isn’t she now living with or married to a man? I guess I can’t keep my gays straight. I say, I say, I can’t keep my gays straight. It’s a joke, son.[/Foghorn Leghorn]

There’s something with Rod Stewart, that’s for sure. (I’m so out of the loop, though.) A fellow student in pottery class worked at a recording studio (I think that’s what it was) and Stewart came in one time. He was carrying on about men and women, how he wanted to do them both, and he did this odd drawing of a penis (which this student brought in to show all of us). Sounded like a lot of his behavior was alcohol-induced, but he sure made an impression on our friend in pottery class.

This kid does nothing for me since he grew up.

What about Mick Jagger and David Bowie – Together! I realize it wasn’t habit for them, but they were very adventurous.
