As a teen he had a thick shock of blond hair. He went to the Marines and that left pretty quickly.
After his time he grew it out some. A different blond. But seemed just as thick. He’s kept it relatively short over the years. Worn lots of hats. Ball caps, welding helmets. Cycle helmets. Hard hats.
Now he thinks it’s getting thin and wants to get the Nutrafol stuff he’s seen advertised.
I, too, am a blonde, and my hair’s been gradually thinning since I was in my mid 20s. Now that I’m in my late 50s, it’s definitely very thin, especially on top, and my forehead is now more of a six-head.
I do wish that I had more hair, but I’m kind of resigned to my fate. I looked into Nutrafol a year or two ago; it’s not cheap. Back when I was in my 30s, I tried Rogaine for a few months, but saw no noticeable effect from it, other than getting the pillow on my bed gross.
Friend of mine was already losing a lot of hair by the ripe old age of 21. He used to have really long hair; the solution was to shave it, not as obvious that way.
A friend of mine was going thin as a freshman in college. By 30 he just gave up, too thin, what there was of it. So yeah, shaved with a mustache and goatee and just owned it.
My hairline has stopped receding but I think I must look bald to people shorter than me, which is most people. Can’t do anything about it. Or won’t if it means wigs or transplants and that nonsense. Never had great hair anyway. Somehow, just before my forehead began to extend over my head I had a good haircut. So good for the very first time in my life people commented on how good my hair looked. That was the flame out I suppose. I only take solace in knowing my brothers are both completely bald.
Going gray is pretty obvious; everyone can see it or nobody can. Thinning is less clear cut and hard to tell from before / after pics. Receding is easy enough to tell from pics, but not real obvious in the moment until it gets to be big.
I started going gray in my late 20s. It was all gray by maybe 32, and is the same shade now 30+ years later. Receding didn’t start until I was 40-something. Now my forehead is distinctly taller. Thinning in the usual place in the top/back is just getting underway now at 65.
Big point being all 3 things don’t have to happen at once. Graying is not evidence of thinning ins not evidence of recession. Some folks do get all 3 going on at once. Not all.
I have no opinion on hair restoration stuff, but most of what’s written says they’re 99% bunk. Rogaine being the only exception and then only for a minority of users.
I am. I’m guessing you’re referring to the “e” on the end of “blonde”? My understanding is that, while “blond” is sometimes used specifically for a male (and “blonde” for a female), I worked in haircare for a number of years, and we just used “blonde” for everyone.
IMO, if he is concerned, he should just buzz it short (instead of shaving bald.). IMO, it is less maintenance and a fine look. No one notices really short hair, but shaved impresses me as something of a statement.
But I’m a slob who really doesn’t care about hair and am fortunate that I seem to have been blessed w/ genes for a full head of hair (up til age 63, at least). My STRONG preference is for guys to wear their hair in a way that looks like they didn’t put a ton of effort into it. And most of my friends don’t put a ton of thought/effort into their looks/dress. If it weren’t for my wife’s preference, I’d either buzz mine tight or wear it down my back.
Does anyone know what age most men go bald? If you have a full head of hair when you turn 60, how common is it to lose your hair in your 60s and beyond?
No shame, but the majority opinion is that thick hair is more attractive, and attractive is good. Thick hair is a marker for Youth and Health. If you want to battle against a preference for youth and health, go for it, but I can’t make it to this week’s meeting.
He might be thinner on top. To me it looks minimal. But it’s not my head.
We’re hoping he moves on to his next idiotic conspiracy and forgets about it. Before his thinning hair causes him to start overthinking it into those moon spheres falling and disintegrating into dust, thereby landing on his head and causing this issue.
I have been on generic Propecia (finasteride) for several years starting when I noticed some thinning, and it basically stopped the hair loss in its tracks. If he wants to do something, it’s a lot easier to stop it early on than to reverse it (transplants, etc.). I get mine from a reputable website for like $20/mo and the consultation is entirely online (you send photos of your head and answer questions, basically). Might be less intimidating for him than going to a doctor. Some people have to deal with some side effects but I haven’t had any problems.
