I just caught wind tonight of this movie, which documents the life of an Iraqi metal band over the last five or so years. It could be a very interesting story, although looks like it doesn’t touch on metal in the rest of the Muslim world, which is a shame. It’s opening in New York and Los Angeles this Friday, so the rest of us will have to catch it on DVD.
Neither link seems to work.
I got the first one to work
Vice (the company that made the film - also makes a magazine) is known for going to really fucked up places and filming about fucked up situations there. If this film interests you, you should rent The Vice Guide to Travel in which they travel to Cherynobul, Congo, the slums of Rio, Pakistan… and a few other places. Interesting film.
This is sort of a hijack, but the most recent podcast (and show, I guess) of “This American Life” talked to a guy who worked for the ministry of information, and ultimately the media after the American invasion in Iraq.
One of the stories he talked about was when his show aired a song called “Saddam Sucks” by a metal band in Baghdad. He was kind of hanging around a couple days later, and heard the loudspeakers from daily prayers condemning him. Fascinating podcast.
His first job was to go on TV as a regular Iraqi teenager whenever some western show wanted to film something about life in Iraq.
ultrafilter’s first link works except it has a trailing " in it.
Not sure what happened to that second link. Try this one.
