Hopefully someone can help me out here, my wife is trying to find a song, and in typical fashion she cant remember much about it.
What she can remember is it was similar to Maxi Priest’s “close to you” in style( she had them next to each other on a mixtape, she thinks it was from 1985 but could well be off by a few years 1980’s to early 1990’s.
The song was sung by a guy, probably a black guy as it was RnB reggaeish sounding and the singer can is singing how he can recall the lady who the song is about having a rose tattoo(it might not have been a rose however) and it may or may not have been on her hip…or thigh…or shoulder…you can see why i am having issues finding the soug as my google fu does not expand to these limitless hints and as she is standing behind me now laughing at my futile attempts to find it i hope someone at the dope recalls the song and can help us out.
The only other detail we have is she thinks the song name was a ladies name.
however i have researched endlessly song names from the 1980’s with lady names as the title with no luck…
This fits a bunch of your criteria: 1985 release, women’s name in the title, rose tattoo, great tune. But it doesn’t fit the R&B or male vocalist: Marlene on the Wall by Suzanne Vega.
I was listening it today, so your OP stuck out at me.
I think we have a winner CaveMike, my wife loves that song so she would have had that song on mixtape back in the day and i am listening to it now and it does seem to fit musically with the Maxi priest song. Now it is not R&B but it is what my wife would consider close and Suzanne does kinda have a husky thing going on there so i am pretty sure that is it but my wife claims she hasnt heard the song she is looking for in years… and i know she has listened to Marlene on the wall not too long ago, but it wouldnt surprise me if she didnt realise it was the same song(crosses fingers)
She is currently asleep but ill check with her first thing tomorrow and get a answer, So thanks for the help.
I remember a song from about that time; I never did catch the name of the song or who sang it, but it fits your criteria. Oddly enough, the lyrics stuck with me for years. The singer was male and sounded like a reggae singer. The song told the story of a guy with dreadlocks who goes to a club and meets a girl. He then proceeds to sing this to her, to the tune of the “Godfather” theme:
I love the way you look at me, I love your smile
Why don’t you come and talk to me just for a while
Give me your love, oh, give me your love…
(forgot the last line)
Then he dances with her and reminisces about a woman named Lydia. This may be the part your wife remembers:
Lydia, oh, Lydia
I wish I never got rid of ya
Lydia, I miss your rose tattoo
I forgot the exact lyrics, but the song ends with the guy spending the night with the girl he just met. Don’t know if she was actually Lydia or not. I also remember the beginning and end of the song had some guy chanting the words “Boom de boom de boom delelelelelelele” a few times. Damn, I wish I remembered the name of this song so I could look for it!
CaveMike…i am so sorry to break it to you…but you still havent! sorry dude. I asked her first thing this morning and said nope right away but did thank you for trying and reminding her of a awesome song. So if we ever meet i must buy you a beer for the attempt.
To the Aussies among us…damn that Angry man! i kept stumbling across him when i was trying to find the song :smack: the first time i found it…i thought well i better try it and, well it is safe to say its not exactly my wife cup of tea, but thanks to you aswell.
so the current hopeful for a beer is Glory, and once again my wife is asleep, it is almost like she does nothing else at 3 in the morning:confused: but i am checking out K7 as i type and that does seem to match her criteria… but i dont even want to get anyones hopes up yet until she confirms it, but i am not only crossing my fingers and toes, but my legs too! possibly because i need to goto the bathroom or for the song either way… thats hope it is the one my search is for and the wife rewards my tireless efforts( of posting to you guys:D)
“Move It Like This” by K7 is the correct song! my wife is very happy to be reunited with the lost tune! thanks for the help guys, I knew someone would know.
