Help Gay Quadriplgic in hospital of Hate

Just popped back into MSN - visited a site I used to frequent called “Christian Debate” and have just found this from one of the regular members.

I don’t accept it’s BS.

Here’s the link:

Article removed, link remains - CF

Sounds like bullshit to me.

Just the style in which it is written sounds fabricated. How come it has to be “Dr. Ronald Lagro,” every time, and not “Dr. Lagro”, or “the doctor”, or even “Lagro?”

Besides whoever wrote, “No attorney in this area will represent me due to the ‘sexual orientation issue’,” doesn’t have a very good grasp of lawyers.

Can anyone confirm: IANA doctor, but I was under the impression that quadruplegics have no sensation at all below the neck, so how could his “scrotum and thighs burn terribly”? Or have I been misinformed?

Googling “Dr Ronald Lagro shasta” does seem to yield that this doctor does exist. The OP has the address wrong by a block, which wouldn’t matter much in a large medical campus.

So something is going very badly for someone.

perhaps the frequent use of the docs name is to defame an innocent (or not) man… having the full name maymean that anyone searching for info on this doc finds this post - whether it’s true or not

Yeah, I found the doctor, and the facility. The tale sounds like a fabrication to me. Apparently the doctor has an enemy.

Quadriplegia or paraplegia can be complete or incomplete. If someone has a complete injury, they cannot feel or move below the level of injury. However, if their injury is incomplete, they can have some sensation or movement below the level of injury. A burning pain is common, so that part of the story is right. The rest, however, who knows? I certainly hope it is a fabrication.

Looks like a job for Snopes! On the other hand, let’s do a little self-help ere. Let’s see what Google has for us…

“Ronald Lagro” gives us a hit! on a Doctor! In someplace called Dunsmuir, California! That is a plus.

“Ronald Kaminski Lagro” give us nothing, very unique name.

“James Wallace” is a common name, Most hits were for a photographer. No luck here.

“Mercy Medical Center” in Mount Shasta exists. (http://mtshasta.mercy.org/index.asp) They deal with neck/spine injuries. (Makes sense, it is a ski area.)

No “Richard Largo” on their database of Doctors.

Mount Shasta has a Police Department (don’t laugh, lots of small towns don’t) They have a web site (http://ci.mt-shasta.ca.us/police/). They got 9 officers. I have sent them an e-mail. I will report back.

Still the OP sounds like bullshjt to me.

Thanks for the clarification, Brynda.

Because someone knows the name of a doctor and his work address, this story is automatically true?

Call me a cynic, but this story sounds far-fetched. I don’t believe that the Mount Shasta police would ignore a report of the violation of a restraining order, for example. I also don’t believe hospital staff will be homophobic at such a large scale: I can understand one bigot, but this sounds like half the staff is after him.

And then he finishes off not by asking for HELP, but by urging people to come to the hospital on a set date and time, and in lieu of that, call the hospital to chastise dr. Largo. Sounds like a mud-throwing campaign aimed at this doctor. After all, if someone really is fearing for their lives, they ask for help to be taken somewhere else. They’ll think of revenge when they’re out of danger.

My gut feeling says “complete bullshit”.

Certainly I should actually have just posted a link to the original article, rather than copy/paste the entire sheet of allegations.

I honestly don;t think I’m in a position to make any judgements in terms of assigning complete guilt or innocence to any party. But the accuser is someone I’ve encountered perdioically online and he’s not shown himself to be otherwise unstable.

Btw - the only reason my own name is on the internet is because I put it there. Some folks forget that Google is an internet search engine - not a registery of births and deaths or otherwise a source for validating the existence of individuals.

Looks lcoser and you’ll find something, though.

Whatever the feeling, there’s certainly an awareness issue here, whatever the truth of the story.

An awareness issue?

Ok. I hereby proclaim that quadrapalegics should not be raped.

I know I’m stepping out on a limb, but is anyone with me?

Jesus Christ, I’ve got a family to worry about. Don’t endanger me with your firebrand ways.

There is too much information in this thread to edit for me, and the story is undoubtedly copied all over the 'net anyway. But since an e-mail has been sent to the Mount Shasta police department by Paul in Saudi, I’m going to ask all of you to please refrain from calling, e-mailing, or otherwise harrassing the hospital and/or doctor mentioned, until we know more about this.

I realise the SDMB staff can’t stop you from doing so if you want to, but I would really hate this sort of thing to turn around and bite us in the ass. Us being the SDMB. So please, a little patience, pending further developments.

Actually, you are welcome to edit the original post how you wish.

The original article is obviously intended to have an emotive effect, but upon reflection it was far too rash of me to copy it here.

I should have just included the link. Better the original post removed if an edit cannot ensure simply that.

Well, all right, I removed the article. What I was saying is it’s too much work to remove all references to the hospital and the doctor from this thread without rendering it unintelligable. And on the odd chance that the story is true, I don’t want to shut down the debate altogether either. But let’s just await the further facts.

The medical center, the doctor, (name’s La Gro), and several other persons, places, or institutions named actually exist.

Whether any of the events are real is a different question. One problem, of course, is that looking from the outside, it is not possible to instantly recognize whether a person is being harmed and their cries for help are being ignored, whether a delusional person is creating events and attitudes out of their own mind and involving real people in their imagined stories, or whether some (other?) person is publishing the story with the intent to defame someone.

One thing that struck me as odd (although not to the point of instantly dismissing the tale) is the claim that the “victim” is using eye movements with infra-red lights to create these messages, yet takes the time (and energy) to repeatedly “type” a long name in full.

You hit the nail on the head with the problems of trying to guage the truth or no of the matter. It’s a definite moral quandry with regards to how to approach it most responsibly.

As to typing through eye-movements - he has always maintained that he is quadraplegic. He periodically posts a picture of himself in a wheelchair besides Stephen Hawking - apparently, they both suffer from the same condition. It’s included somewhere in the replies on the site linked to.
