Let’s hope there aren’t many more like Wayne Albert Bleyle out in the world. According to this AP story, Bleyle worked with severely handicapped and comatose children and adults, and has been molesting them for no one knows how long, but maybe for as much as 25 years.
As someone who works in a hospital, I know that my hospital is working very hard to improve care based on reducing medical errors. But I’ve never heard or read a word about preventing deliberate abuse. It’s certainly not something we want to believe can happen here, and I personally don’t think it does. But I’d have to say we need to look at our patient care practices and start thinking about more stringent ways to protect our patients from us*. I imagine that requiring all patient care delivery to be performed by teams of 2 or more would be a logistical, let alone financial nightmare.
*Though I work in a hospital, I perform no direct patient care myself, so I am using the term “us” rather broadly.
I know I probably says more about me but as I read this earlier today I thought “…you know there should be a person whose job it is to smash genitals flat with a mallet”
I’m not prepared to go on record one way or the other on the “fucking comatose children” issue at this time, but this thread did remind me of the funniest thing in the movie Happy, Texas: the name of the character played by Steve Zahn (who was, as it turned out, a convict).
I guess that list doesn’t impress me much. If you go looking for any particular reasonably common name, you’ll probably dredge up a similar quantity of results. And other than Gacy and Elmer Wayne Henley, no one on that list seems to merit any particular notability (and Henley is a big step down from Gacy). Surely there must be more prominent and well-known examples, since the link between “Wayne” and fucked-upedness seems to have been independently formed in the minds of several different people.
I guess I can think of John Wayne Bobbitt. (Not a murderer, of course, but at the epicenter of his own sad tale of fucked-upedness.)
Well, why don’t they just install video cameras over the beds of anyone who isn’t in a position to grant or deny consent? Oh, yeah. We’re talking hospitals & the medical profession. It’d cost an extra $10,000/day.
My dad’s girlfriend and I discussed the “Wayne” issue one time and it was her theory that many of these fucked up guys named Wayne were probably named after John Wayne. And the kind of macho guy who would name their son after John Wayne, she claimed, is more likely to be abusive to his son, and lead to him growing up with issues.
