I would start him off on some of the shorts. I can’t remember the name of it now, but the one before Manos about selling cars is a great one.
No! No! The Horror of Spider Island! “So Mike, if you’re a woman and you’re in a plane crash, you instantly become languid, helpless, sex- starved, and you murmur a lot?”
“Hired!” - a Jam Handy Production. Preferrably to be followed with the muscial “Hired!”
I have hooked a few folks with ‘Warrior of the Lost Universe’. Its bad, but its in color so it is more approachable, is hilarious from the get-go, and doesn’t have as many slow points as other MSTY movies.
Aother one I use is ‘Pod People’.
If not Godzilla, then Gamera. It helps if you like, or at least are willing to watch, a kaiju movie, of course. But I found all of the Gamera movies hilarious to begin with, and the commentary was even better. And let’s not forget the song:
Gamera is really neat
He is filled with turtle meat
We all love you Gamera
Oh, and I like Prince of Space as a suggestion as well. I’m still not sure what the point of that movie was but I do remember “Your weapons cannot harm me, for I am Prince of Space!”
How about the shorts?
I always thought The Cave Dwellers was the most accessible.
Just a little note; I played this clip while Whatsit Jr. and MiniWhatsit were within hearing, and now they’re both dancing around the living room singing at the top of their lungs, “He TRIIIIIED to kill me with a forklift!!”
Oh, well. Better than Barney, I guess.
Yet another vote for “The Final Sacrifice”. Best. Episode. Ever.
Santa Claus Vs The Martians is the one that hooked me.
Why not start out with the feature film, that riffed This Island Earth? Surely that one would be fairly easy to locate on DVD? Additionally, the target film is quite watchable on its own merits. Though the “host segments” were a bit limp (Dr. F was never really the same without Frank to play off of), the in-theater riffing was first-rate in my opinion.
Plus, offering to explain the “manipulator arms” gag provides the perfect excuse to inflict **“Manos” The Hands of Fate ** on the poor dope… heh heh…
ROWSDOWER!!!
Anyways, don’t you mean “Space Mutiny”?
I always liked “Jack Frost” and “Overdrawn at the Memory Bank” myself.
Having just rewatched *Hobgoblins *last night, I have to say, don’t start with that one. I vote for The Phantom Planet (also rewatched last night. What can I say, we’re out of new Simpsons.) Space Mutiny was the first one I ever watched, and Prince of Space is the one that almost made me choke. Speaking of, I was thinking of heading out to a store to pick up another volume tonight.
Oh, Prince of Space is a good one. And Invasion of the Neptune Men is particularly wonderful, what with the Hitler building and all.
I vote for Mitchell or one of the shorts collections.
another vote for Pod People. I was aware of MST3K for a while, but that was the first movie that turned me into the type of fan who would set aside 2 hours of my day to watch the show!
Trumpy can do stupid things!
I’m watching The Sword and the Dragon right now and it has me giggling uncontrollably.
I recommend it.
Without a doubt, Prince of Space is the best of the series. I’ve seen it almost 20 times, even have it on my computer, and I almost mess my pants every time I see it. It’s just sooo funny!
I’ll concur with Final Sacrifice and Prince of Space. I will also submit for consideration: Pumaman. Not the most consistent laughs I ever got out of an MST, but easily some of the biggest.
“Pu…ma man! He flies like a moron!”
My vote’s for Hobgoblins!, because it has my favorite line:
“Sir, there’s been an accident at the movie studio!”
Crow: “‘We made Hobgoblins!’”
But The Screaming Skull has [Crow] “Can we help you movie lady? Do you need a push or something?”
Zombie Nightmare, “I’m sure strolling at Howard Beach won’t be a problem.”
Werewolf, [Crow] “Ah, one of the lesser Estevezes.”
…and Danger!DeathRay
[Mike] “Ah, the ocean’s beautiful in this part of the tub.”
[Crow] “Special effects by Billy!”
[Mike] “Don’t go up there–you’ll become a toy!”
No closer, am I?
