That was originally paired with “War of the Colossal Beast.” You just can’t go wrong with a Bert I. Gordon film; any of those you might be able to find are so bad they’re great.
I think it’s unavailable now (dangit!) but I laughed hysterically through “Indestructible Man.” I wish it was available on DVD.
If you want to really hook your friend, I’d go with (if it’s commercially available) War of the Colossal Beast. Besides having one of the best lines ever (“No, I mean Glen passed a truck on the highway!”), it opens with the quintessential MST short–Mr. B. Natural !
Second choice would be Laserblast . It was the last one they did for Comedy Central, and no one was sure of the fate of the show, so they pulled out all the stops and gave us one of the funniest episodes ever!
“You know, for my money, I can never get enought sheet cake!”
“My God, if those pants give way, it’ll be like a piano exploding!”
“Ah, those lovable Southern California ‘crackers’!”
The second Legend of Boggy Creek that they skewered. I hadn’t laughed so hard in a long, long time. Think of the backwoods, a goofy and earnest group of people, and a hairy creature…Well, one hairy human and one Bigfootish creature.
“I claim this land for Arkansas!”
“God bless you, half-man half-pig.”
“I’m gonna download Pong. It’ll take about seven hours.”
I second The Day the Earth Froze. The square dancing scene to Joel (? I think it’s Joel, anyway) and the bots singing “You failed, you failed, you failed!” ad nauseum caused me to fall off the couch.
Mitchell is also a solid choice.
What the hell is the name of the one with the giant grasshoppers?
My friend has a commercial copy of Space Mutiny that he somehow got long before MST got ahold of it. He told me to be grateful for all the stuff that got edited out of the MST version.
The giant grasshoppers are in The Begining of the End.
