Help me come up with some TV Shows for my parent's Netflix account.

My Mom e-mailed me today looking for recommendations for a new show to watch on Netflix (on disc, not instant watch). The last three shows that they watched and liked were Bones, Eureka, and Warehouse 13. I’m stumped on what to suggest for them to watch next.

Any ideas?

Psych!

Ellery Queen

Twin Peaks

Pushing Daisies

Wonderfalls

Leverage

We had skipped them when they were first run, so the Netflix route worked well to catch us up on these that we really liked:

Dexter
Weeds
Grey’s Anatomy
Mad Men
Breaking Bad

If you think they would like it, there’s nothing better than The Wire.

Others that we did see first run that I can honestly recommend:

The Sopranos
Deadwood
Rome
Carnivale
Six Feet Under
Justified
Sons of Anarchy
The Shield

My Dad likes shows like The Shield, Breaking Bad, etc., but my Mom does not. Right now I’m looking for something for them to watch together.

Have they seen Six Feet Under?

what about some mini series like band of brothers, the pacific, & generation kill? Treme is really really good

If they liked Eureka and Warehouse 13, they might like Dr. Who, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, maybe even Deep Space 9.

Mad Men.

I was think about Dr. Who, not sure if it’s too British for them. My Dad’s already a Star Trek guy, he’s seen everything except for most of Voyager. I pretty sure I remember him saying that he didn’t like Babylon 5. He’s not a fan of “weird,” as he would say. For example, he would hate Twin Peaks.

They very rarely watch current TV, usually just one or two shows a year. Right now they’re watching Glee (which my Dad is getting sick of) and they were watching The Event. They did somewhat like Lost and Heroes (although I think they were both done with halfway through. I know they didn’t finish Heroes.)

ER
Picket Fences *
The X-Files *
Northern Exposure *
Dead Like Me
The Dresden Files
Firefly

  • Twin Peaks is to “weird” as these are to “quirky”.

Babylon 5 is only good after season 1 (or 2) when Sheridan replaces Sinclair.
Doctor Who has eras depending upon taste. My impression would be to view Season 10 (Tennant) and see the reaction.

See what he thinks about “Blink” (the best Doctor Who episode in which the Doctor is largely absent) and go from there.

Since they liked “Heroes” for a while, try the first season of “The 4400”. Also take a “Quantum Leap” back to the 90s.

Firefly
NCIS
JAG
The Unit (except for the last season)

As someone who just recently watched all of the New Doctor Who in the last month, I never understood the recommendation of “Blink” for first time viewers. Yeah, it’s a great example of how amazing the show can be, but it has so little in common with the other episodes.

Oh, 4400 is a good idea. I know at least my Dad has seen most of Quantum Leap.

From the reactions to the posts in this thread I would suggest that your mom use the Netflix feature and rate as many shows and movies as she has time for and let Netflix do the recommending of things she and your dad will probably like.

The more shows they rate the better the recommendations are likely to be.

*The Middleman *is really good.

If they liked *Warehouse 13 *they might like Friday the 13th–the Series. Of course, they might have watched that one while they were dating.

True, but it’s the least British and “weird” I can think of.

How about In Plain Sight?

Legend of the Seeker
Merlin
Sanctuary
X-files
Robin Hood
Masterpiece Mystery!: Sherlock: Series 1
Firefly
Dollhouse

I usually put the first season on and yank it if they can’t get into it after an episode or two. If they like then you can rest of the seasons on the queue.
