I’m going to the No Kings protest on Saturday. My heart is set on a sign with the Virginia state seal, but my head has vetoed that, as it would almost certainly be interpreted as a threat to the Orange One with possibly severe consequences for me.
My next thought is a message to any Service Members who may be appearing (OO has announced he’ll be sending them to Northern Virginia) Saying:
Constitution or King? with a picture of shopping bag man and the tank at Tiananmen Square. But I am not sure I’m a good enough artist to get that picture across. And I’m not sure any Service Members who would be there would be old enough to recognize it.
What good signs have you seen? What good messages need sending? What disruptive idea can I insert into the Hive Mind? What good trouble do you recommend I cause?
“…protect and defend the Constitution of the United States” - it’s part of the oath every service member makes when sworn in. That’s what I plan to carry.
Not just service members but all Federal employees, elected Congresspeople, judges, political appointees, and of course the President and Vice President of the United States take an oath of office to “…protect and defend the Constitution of the United States”. A few of them seemed to have forgotten about this, or perhaps are willfully obtuse like a small child being defiant of their bedtime.
I did one for the last one that said: “Morons Are Governing America”. Got some laughs w/that. This time I’m going more serious. I’ve made one that started out with: "IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE’ in nice black store-bought lettering. Using a Sharpie I X’ed out the CAN’T and wrote “IS” and added “ING” after the “HAPPEN”. Then, for good measure I added a copy of trump’s signature and taped the Sharpie itself to the sing.
I live in Bougietown, a Stepfordesque bedroom community, white as bread and stupid as a giant red elephant. On the other hand, God forfend some overzealous cop sees it and now I’m charged with threatening the president. Guess I’ma find out.
I suppose there is no Khalid Al-Islambuli Brigade in the US Army, and it could be interpreted as a threat if you wore his effigy or his name on a t-shirt or a banner that also included the words “I love parades!”, provided the very competent people handling security and such stuff in Washington understood what you were referring to. If they do, you’d be in trouble.
So Tienanmen Square Tank Man, but then the Chinese news will not show your protest.
Don’t make it too complicated. It needs to be legible and comprehensible at a glance, from a distance: people aren’t going to spend much time looking at any one sign.
Over here, there’s usually one wag relying on the all-purpose
How about just a simple crown, in a red circle with a red slash through it? Much like a No Smoking or No Left Turn sign? No words needed; the picture gets the message across.
OK, what about modifying the state seal?
Remove the dead tyrant; show the Goddess of Virtue trampling on a large crown; and change the motto to “No Tyrants”?
