Help me find a new nose

Based on your photoshop picture, it looks like it should be one of the simpler operations because you aren’t going to change the bones.

Definitely not, just the cartilig…cartila…cart… the non-bone stuff at the tip.

I realize that you don’t know me and my opinion ain’t worth spit, but here it is anyway.

Dang, lady, you are hell for pretty. You have a face with a lot of character, and I like it just the way it is. If I had any say in the matter, I wouldn’t let anybody get a scalpel near that nose.

Again, I realize that my opinion ain’t woth spit. But I don’t think you should be even considering cosmetic surgery.

I don’t really know how to word this, but there’s something…cultural?..about your nose. It has character and…heritage? None of these words are quite what I’m looking for, but its something to do with history, and strength, and…oh, I don’t know. I think your nose gives you power, in a way. It makes you look powerful. Impressive. Someone I would listen to. My mom has a fairly large nose, and has been teased for it (hehe even by her kids!), but its something about my mom that just reinforces her strength of will, and her confidence, and her outgoingness (is that a word?), and I would HATE to think that she could ever change it (theres 0% chance of that, though!) I still think you should keep yours as-is.

I think I understand what you’re looking for, though, based on your photoshop pic. If its what you REALLY want, well, we can’t stop you, and I hope you’re happy with the outcome (when the time comes). I know that there are some things about me that I sometimes think I’d like the “shave off” or adjust a little, but I’m pretty damn sure I never would do it. I think I want to grow to love myself, because thats what everyone says we should do, and it does sound like a nice idea. Though there are a few moles that need to go, ASAP!

I’ve always found larger noses attractive. It’s nice to hear other guys feel the same way.

I’m sorry, but to me, people who choose to have their looks altered with surgery are tools. Why can’t people just be happy with the way they look? There is a small, but non-negligible risk of DYING on the operating table during even the most routine procedures. Is looking “better” even a little bit worth risking your life? Not to me! We’ve become so accustomed to allowing society to dictate to us how we should look, and what is considered “attractive” that some of us will do anything to fit into that ideal. Unless the thing you want to change is a life-threatening condition, it’s nothing but pure vanity…and that’s uglier in the long run.

**I’m sorry, but to me, people who choose to have their looks altered with surgery are tools. **
They are people, not tools, and I don’t believe you are sorry. The fact that you see people that way says more about you than about them.

** Why can’t people just be happy with the way they look? **
You speak for yourself. Do a little research into the matter of self image before you waste breath exhaling another bland aphorism. (oops this isn’t the pit yet)

There is a small, but non-negligible risk of DYING on the operating table during even the most routine procedures. True. Her doctor should advise her of the chances of that, and how they compare to driving in a car, or working for the Post Office, or getting mammograms. I had a risky situation arise, but I had much more risky surgery. Your point is valid, if vaingloriously dramatic.

** Is looking “better” even a little bit worth risking your life? Not to me!** Careful, those razor blades you use while shaving can slit your jugular and KILL you! Don’t shave? Ingrown hairs get infected with drug-resistant staph. Cross the street to the barber – whoa, talk about risk! You can get run over by a car, or a bad haircut.

** We’ve become so accustomed to allowing society to dictate to us how we should look, and what is considered “attractive” that some of us will do anything to fit into that ideal.** OpalCat is a person, not a soapbox for your politics of society. You seem to expect a lot of her, and do a little dictating of your own. She is an individual, not just your concept of society.

** Unless the thing you want to change is a life-threatening condition, it’s nothing but pure vanity…and that’s uglier in the long run. ** More judgement of her beauty, but of her character this time. The only ugly here is how her nose appears to her (something that you have completely failed to understand), and your denunciation of her vanity as if you have none of your own.

Whatever OpalCat chooses to do with her body is up to her. Personally, I feel one should leave nature to do what it feels is best for us. Just because a surgical alternative is available does not make it right. You seem to forget that these sorts of choices were not available a hundred or so years ago, and that before they were, almost no one even considered changing their looks in such a manner. You talk about self-image as if it’s a natural part of the human existence, but it isn’t. It’s an artifact of society; an attempt to fit all of us into the mold of the “ideal person” – a thing that does not exist in reality. I don’t judge others on their looks, but I guess you do or you wouldn’t be so quick to applaud their efforts to change them.

Opal … I totally respect your decision to have a nose job if you decide to go for it … but looking at your pictures … I just had to say something:

You have a great nose. A person’s beauty is often magnified by some slightly exaggerated feature, not diminished. Here are some of the possible effects a nosejob could have for you:

  • you will lose some of your uniqueness, and maybe look too much like “every other girl”

  • (worst case scenario) … think Jacko … on a lesser scale, obviously, but things do go wrong, and they fall apart, or they are just not quite as good as they were … and you could start a whole vicious cycle on damage control with your nose trying to fix it over again.

I look at your photos and I think “please, don’t do this” … it really doesn’t seem worth the risk. Or maybe … since you look quite young (how old are you?) just wait a few more years and see if you’re still dissatisfied.

Just my opinion, not meant to offend.

Just curious.

If you had a medical condition, let’s say diabetes…

you would forgo the insulin shots?

After all, nature is just doing what it feels is best for you, right?

Where exactly do you draw the line?

Mind your language, please. Just because you disagree with you doesn’t make them “tools”.

Bad News Baboon, I’d say a lot of people draw the line between medical procedures aimed at curing illnesses and medical procedures purely for cosmetic reasons. Of course, a nose job can be both, but in this case it falls in the latter category.

My concern would be that with the Gastric Bypass, and then a Rhinoplasty, I imagine there would be a whole raft of folks waiting to see if Opal started talking about another “body change” procedure of some sort. Then folks could be scared, and rightly so.

On the nose: I think it looks fine, but you do what you need to do. Whatever happens, I hope you are happy with the results.

My apologies for that.

I did say in my previous post that health risk was a considering factor. I could have been more clear about that, but I think the point was made.

I’ve separated these out so I can address them:

  1. it doesn’t make it wrong, either.

  2. Lots of things weren’t available. Hair gel, tooth whitening toothpaste, push-up bras… I suppose that anything that we do to make ourselves look better is equally evil?

  3. Please provide a cite for this.

  4. Better yet, how about you don’t judge others at all?

First off, a very major point: I did not have a gastric bypass. I would never have that surgery as I could never live with the reduced quality of life that is the result.

Secondly, my DS surgery was not a cosmetic proceedure. If you had spent time with me, seeing how often I can’t even go grocery shopping because of the pain in my knees, or seeing how out of breath I get from a walk to the mailbox, or listened to my doctor explain to me that my 2 years of trying to get pregnant wasn’t successful because I was too fat… maybe then you would understand why I had the surgery that I did.

Actually, I’d disagree, since if I had a nose job I’d ask them to deal with whatever it is (huge adenoids, perhaps) that have made it virtually impossible for me to breathe through my nose for my entire life.

Well, that changes things of course - but it’s the first time you mentioned a health problem with your nose. Unless I missed it.

No, it was the first time.

First time about the nose, but we know about the rest of the body. She’s got a good brain too… too bad she doesn’t focus more on that.

Opal, I think you oughta go volunteer in a soup kitchen.
And use the money you didn’t use for cosmetic surgery to take your kid to see the Mayan pyramids in Mexico.

Hey, don’t post on a message board if you don’t want input.

[[You seem to forget that these sorts of choices were not available a hundred or so years ago, and that before they were, almost no one even considered changing their looks in such a manner. ]]

Maybe not rhinoplasty, but people have been mutilating themselves for the sake of beauty since the beginning of time. I’m not as offended by Opal wanting cosmetic surgery as by her constant need to ask the online world to weigh in, like we should care.
