OK Dopers, here is your challenge: My dad heard a country song about 15 years ago that included the line “can’t go home no more.” (or possibly “anymore.”) It’s not a blues song - I did some searching with no luck – I found a Louisiana-style blues song by Michael Doucet, but that wasn’t it. He said it sounded like the “quintessential country song,” for whatever that’s worth. He doesn’t know if “can’t go home no more” is the title or just a line in the song. He would like to know what this song is, but thinks he’ll never find it. I want to show him that no case is too small, no question too obscure for the almighty Doper. Any clues?? Thanks in advance.
Nanci Griffith has a song called “You Can’t Go Home.”
Hmm, he says that 's not it. Another little tidbit: some guy got kicked out by his wife and he can’t go home no more.
The line you quote doesn’t appear in it, but Billy Ray Cyrus had a song in 1992 called “where’m I gonna live when I get home.” It’s about a man whose wife kicked him out. I know this is only loosly connected to your question, but this came to mind as the “quintessential country song.”
Hope that helps.
oh God, did I just out myself as a country music listener? :smack:
How about “Anymore” by Travis Tritt, from his CD It’s All About to Change from 1991?
“You Can’t Go Home” by the Statler Brothers from 1971?
He’s asleep right now. Thanks for the suggestions so far – I checked
'em all. The most likely one, I think, is the Billy Ray Cyrus one. For some reason I think this is the one he meant, even though it’s not exactly what he said. Certainly seems like it would answer to “quintessential country song.” I think I’m going to get it from iTunes tonight and play it for him in the morning. If that’s wrong, there goes $.99, but if it’s right, he’ll be amazed! I knew y’all <–heh wouldn’t let me down!
You know, I was just listening to the Old 97’s and remembered this chours:
Which makes me think they might be talking about the same song your dad is talking about. In all likelihood the 97’s (if not your dad) are referring to “I Won’t Be Home No More,” by Hank Williams.
