Help me get rid of this annoying notification ringtone on my phone

A bit over a year ago, I bought a Samsung Galaxy J1 Ace cellphone. I have a few standard notification ringtones for incoming messages, alarm clock, etc.

About two months ago I began to get random notifications, apparently Samsung’s postman ringtone. This come in with no apparent connection to any activity on my phone. I have not been able to correlate them to the arrival of any message or anything else. Sometimes several notifications will sound within a minute, then none for many hours.

After checking on the internet, it appears others have had this problem. I downloaded an app called Ringtone Remover. With it I was able to find “Postman” in my “Notifications” file and delete it.

It didn’t work. Although the tone was apparently gone, it kept sounding. What’s worse, the file appears to have come back! After being apparently deleted, after a few days it reappeared in the Notifications list. This has happened twice now.

I have checked “Sounds and notifications” on my Settings, and while “Postman” appears it is not checked. I have checked my Audio files and not found it there. I have checked my apps and disabled “Notifications” on most of them, except the ones I regularly use.

Any ideas? This means I can’t leave the sound on on my phone at night, since the tones wake me up. This means I can’t get emergency calls or use the phone as an alarm.

Any ideas?

long shot- does that phone have NFC? I had a different Samsung phone which did, and if I set it down on my wallet it would detect the PayWave credit card inside and sound notifications.

Not as far as I know. Anyway, the phone chirps no matter where it is. It’s not normally near my wallet.

Call Samsung. Or go to the store where you bought it…usually the clerks are tech savvy… (not always tho)I had a Samsung that routinely called it’s own number…never could get it to stop…had to get a new phone…the more bells and whistles it has…you know the rest

Test it to be sure, but my Samsung phone’s alarm still works even when the sound’s turned off.

I tested by calling the phone, and not only doesn’t it ring, the call goes to voicemail. So even if that worked for the alarm, I wouldn’t receive incoming calls. (The alarm isn’t the most serious problem, since I have an alarm on my watch.)

Thanks for the suggestions, but they don’t seem to have worked for you.

Anyone know how to access the audio files themselves, or have a suggestion on an effective app to access the ringtones?

Hook it up to the USB on your computer and access them that way. Mind how you poke around any UI files.

I also pull the battery out every few weeks while the phone’s on to make it force a reset. It’s sometimes helpful in shaking the bugs out.
Lastly, any free apps you’ve had for more than a few months ought to be deleted and then reinstalled so no updates will be missed.

The cell phone doesn’t make audible noise when called & immediately routes the call to VM or the cell phone doesn’t make audible noise when called but routes the call to VM after the appropriate # of rings? You make it sound like the former, which shouldn’t occur when rings/notifications are just set to silent. Can you see the incoming call on the cell phone when you call it?

You may need to (turn on, then) go into Developer Options & flip a setting to be able to see all of your files.

What version of Android are you running?

A) Factory Reset
Should be an option available somewhere in your settings. Good idea to back up your stuff first. This will bring the phone back to its pristine state that should presumably exclude whatever is causing the annoying tone. Once done, reinstall your apps with caution.

B) Root and install [del]CyanogenMod[/del] LineageOS.
Never done this myself, nothing to add to this aside from the advice provided above. If your warranty has already expired, then you have nothing to lose.

C) Consult an exorcist.
If your phone continues to misbehave after the above, it is probably possessed by the devil.
